Government of India recently introduced a dedicated symbol for its currency (Rupee). Rupee (Rs.) is being used by several other countries including our neighbours Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka & others. So having a dedicated symbol for India becomes necessitated for it to be differentiated from others. Initially I was sceptical about this symbol, considered this to be a publicity effort by the central government and that the symbol has to be accepted by all language speakers in the country. In the last few weeks as I see the growing usage of this in Media and elsewhere, I am convinced that this is a welcome move and it is needed to reinforce India’s growing Economy and its importance in the World stage.

Now the question is how do you start using this in PCs.

- Some companies immediately on government announcement shipped font files containing this character. Two of them (Foradian, Artech) have mapped this symbol to ~ (Tilde character above the Tab key in your keyboard). This is nothing but a Quick ‘n’ Dirty temporary fix. I will not recommend this as it doesn’t provide any interoperability. At the worst it can be used on Presentations and Brochures for display only. 

- The proper process for using this character is that Unicode consortium & then ISO have to give it a unique number (location ID in the code-chart), which they have done tentatively in their recent meeting in USA. Department of Information Technology announced that Unicode has allocated U+20B9 location for the new Rupee Symbol unique to India. The existing location of  U+20A8 (that displays Rs) will still continue for use by others.  Now this has to ratified and published in their upcoming standards document and then Software vendors (Operating System mainly) have to implement this by shipping this Glyph in their default fonts and enabling typing of this character in their Keyboard Inputs. This is the only route to ensure that your documents (Word files, Excel spread sheets or even a webpage) having this character will show up the same in someone else PC.

A company called Foradian Technologies have released here, a free software to type the new Rupee Symbol and display it according to the proposed Unicode location, making this symbol available before it gets Operating System vendor official support.

திரு.பழ.கருப்பையா எழுதியுள்ள ”எல்லைகள் இல்லா இராம காதை” என்ற இந்தப் புத்தகத்தைப் படிக்கும் வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது. தனக்கு மிகவும் விருப்பமான கம்ப இராமாயணத்தை எளிமையான முறையில், உதாரணங்கள் பலக்கொடுத்து அனைவருக்கும் எட்டும் வகையில் தந்துள்ள ஆசிரியரை நாம் எவ்வளவு பாராட்டினாலும் தகும். நல்லதொரு புத்தகம், அனைவரும் படித்து மகிழலாம்!. புத்தகத்தில் இருந்து சில உதாரணங்கள்: “எவனுடைய ஆட்சியில் அரசு ஒவ்வொரு காரியமும் செய்து முடிக்கும்போது, மக்கள் அதைத் தாங்களே செய்ததாக நினைக்கிறார்களோ … , அவனுடைய ஆட்சியே சிறந்த ஆட்சி என்று சீனத்துத் தாவோயியம் கூறும்!” “இத்தாலிய நாட்டு மாக்கியவேலி உலகப் பெரும் அரசியல் விற்பன்னன். அவன் மன்னன் என்னும் உலகப் புகழ்பெற்ற ஒரு நூலினை எழுதினான். அரசியலில் வெற்றி ஒன்றுதான் குறிக்கோள்; அதை அடைய எந்தப் பித்தலாட்டமும் செய்யலாம்; யாரை வேண்டுமானாலும் பலியிடலாம்; கருவுத்தை எந்த வகையாலும் நிரப்பிக் கொள்ளலாம்; அரசியலுக்குச் சூதும் வாதும் சூழ்ச்சிகளும் தான் முக்கியம்” ”ஏதோ திருவிழாக் கூட்ட நெரிசலில் சந்தித்த ஒருவரோடு பேச முடியாமல் கழிவதுபோல், இராமன் கைகேயி சந்திப்பு கழியக்கூடாதே!ஆனால் அப்படித்தானே நடந்தது” “பழைய ஏற்பாட்டின் (old testament) இறுதிக் காலத்திலும் புதிய ஏற்பாட்டின் தொடக்க காலத்திலும் ஏரோது என்ற மன்னன் இருந்தான். அவனுக்கு ஓர் ஆசைநாயகி இருந்தாள்... ஒரு நாள் அந்த ஆசைநாயகியின் மகள் நடனமாடி மன்னன் ஏரோதை மகிழ்வித்தாள். ஏரோது தன்னிலை மறந்த பெரு மகிழ்ச்சியில் ‘நீ என்ன கேட்டாலும் தருகிறேன், கேள்! என்று பலர் முன்னிலையில் ஆணையிட்டு வாக்குக் கொடுத்தான்” “குடியாட்டிகளிலும் இளவரசுப் பட்டங்கள் உண்டு; மணிமுடி மட்டும் தலையில் வைத்துக் கொள்வதில்லை. குடும்பங்களின் ஆட்சிதான் இப்போதைய குடியாட்சி. குடி என்பது குடும்பங்களையும் குறிக்கும் தானே! … ஆகவே அன்றும் இன்றும் அதிகாரம் என்பது அரசபோகமே!” ”வால்மீகி இராமனையும் சீதையும் முன்கூட்டியே ஒருவரை ஒருவர் கண்டுகொள்ளும்படி செய்யவில்லை… கம்பன் சங்ககாலம் போற்றிய அன்பின் ஐந்திணையைத் தானும் போற்றுபவன். தமிழினத்தின் வாழ்வை ஒழுங்குபடுத்த ஒல்காப் புகழ்த் தொல்காப்பியன் எழுதிய பொருளதிகாரத்தைப் பெரிதும் போற்றுபவன்” “…குடியாட்சி முறைக்குக் கொள்ளி வைக்க வந்தவன் சீசர் என்பதனால் புருட்டசு சீசரை எதிர்க்கிறான்… ஒன்றுக்கொன்று நேர்மாறான வாழ்க்கைப் போக்கினர் குடியாட்சிக்கான போரில் ஒன்றாக இணைகிறார்கள்…. இங்கே சீதையை மீட்கவும் அறத்தை நிலைநிறுத்தவுமான ஒரு பெரும்போரில் சுக்கிரீவனோடு வருகின்றவர்களையோ, தன்னோடு இதில் இணைய விரும்புகின்றவர்களையோ தராதரம் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருப்பது இயலக்கூடிய செயலுமில்லை; அறிவான செயலுமில்லை” ’குழு அரசியல் (groupism) ஒரு கட்சியை மொத்தமாக வலுவிழக்கச் செய்துவிடும்! எதிர்க்கட்சியின்மீது ஒன்றுபட்டுப் பாயவேண்டிய அம்புகள் பிளவுபடுவதால், ஒருமைப்பட்ட தாக்குதல் நடக்காது” “எல்லாப் புகழும் அல்லாவுக்கே என்று இறைமையைத் துதிப்பது வேறு; எல்லாப் புகழும் தலைவனுக்கே என்று தன் புகழை மட்டுமே பாடியாக வேண்டிய கட்டாயத்தை ஏற்படுத்துவது வேறு!”

கார்த்தி மற்றும் தமன்னா நடித்த இந்தப் படத்தை (பையா) இன்று பார்த்தேன். பீமாவைப் போலவே எதிர்ப்பார்ப்புகளை கிளப்பி ஆனால் ஏமாற்றம் அடைய வைத்த மற்றும் ஒரு படத்தை கொடுத்துள்ளார் இயக்குனர் லிங்குசாமி. படம் முழுக்க காரில் சென்றுக் கொண்டே இருக்கிறார்கள், இல்லை ஒரு இருபது பேரை அடிக்கிறார் நாயகன். ஒருவிதமான பாவனையும் இல்லாமல் பாடல்களில் மட்டும் ஆடிப் போகிறார் நாயகி. நாயகனின் நண்பர்களின் வேலை இடங்களில் கேள்வியே கேட்க மாட்டார்கள் போல, எப்போதும் வேலையே இல்லாத நாயகனோடு செல்பேசியில் பேசுவதும், உதவி செய்வதும் தான் அவர்களின் வேலைப் போல.

கார்த்தியிடம் இன்னும் பருத்திவீரன் சாயல் (பேச்சிலும், முகப்பாவனைகளிலும்) போகவில்லை, அதை அவர் முற்றிலும் மறத்தல் படம் பார்க்கும் நமக்கு நல்லது!

இந்த பதிவும் கிரேஸி மோகன் பற்றியது தான்.

சமீபத்தில் வெளிவந்த 'கொல கொலயா முந்திரிக்கா' படத்தை இன்று பார்த்தேன். கிரேஸி மோகன் கதை, வசனம் எழுதும் படங்களில் நிறைய கடி ஜோக்குகள் இருக்கும், நாமும் அதை ரசிப்போம், சிரிப்போம். ஆனால் இந்தப் படமே ‘கடியாக’ தான் இருந்தது. ஜெயராம், பாஸ்கர், நீலுப் போன்ற பல சிறந்த நகைச்சுவை நடிகர்கள் இருந்தும், வசனம் பல இடங்களில் கைக் கொடுத்தும் கதையில் சுத்தமாக ஒன்றுமே இல்லாததால் அனைத்தும் வீணடிக்கப்பட்டுவிட்டது.

கார்த்திக்குமார், ஷீகா நன்றாக பண்ணியுள்ளார்கள், வாழ்த்துக்கள். இதற்கு மேல் படத்தைப் பற்றிச் சொல்ல எனக்கும் ஒன்றுமே இல்லை.

முழுமையான விமர்சனம் வேண்டும் என்றால் இங்கே படிக்கலாம்.

கிரேஸி மோகனின் “கே.பி.டி.சிரிப்புராஜ சோழன்” என்ற இந்த சரித்திர (திரிக்கின்ற) நகைச்சுவைப் புத்தகத்தைப் படித்தேன், சிரித்தேன், சிரித்துக் கொண்டேயிருந்தேன். அருமை! ஒரு விஷயத்தை முழுக்க கதைவிட்டுவிட்டு கீழே அதற்கு ஆதாரம் என்று வேறு மேலும் கதைவிடுகிறார் கிரேஸி.  அதே போல பெயர்களிலே நம்மை சிரிக்க வைக்கிறார், உதாரணம்: கே.பி.டி.சிரிப்புராஜ சோழன்… அதாவது தந்தையின் பெயர் கேணக்கிறுக்கசிம்மன் (முதல் எழுத்து கே) தலைநகரம் பித்துப்பிடிச்சான்பாளையம் முதல் எழுத்து பி), ஆராய்ச்சி மணியின் சத்தம் டிங்டாங் (முதல் எழத்து டி) இப்படி. மற்ற கதாப்பாத்திரங்களின் பெயர்களையும் விட்டுவைக்கவில்லை “ராஜகுரு படுகிழதோப்பனார்”, படைத் தளபதி “அவசரக் குடுக்கை அரையர்” என்பது போலப் பல.

ஒரே காமெடி கதையில் ஒரு போர், காதல், தேர்தல், பழிவாங்குதல், தந்தைப்பாசம் என்று அனைத்துயும் கலந்து அடித்திருக்கிறார் கிரேஸி, நிச்சயம் கிரேஸியானது தான் இது. தற்கால இந்தியாவில் நடக்கும் தேர்தல் குளறுப்பாடுகளை, நல்ல நகைச்சுவையாகவும் அதுவும் ஒரு புராண கதையில் சொல்லி சாடமுடியம் என்றால் அது கிரேஸியால் மட்டும் தான் முடியும். அதையும் இந்தப் புத்தகத்தில் செய்கிறார்.

கிழக்கு பதிப்பகத்தின் ஒரு வெளியிடு இது, படிக்கவும், சிரிக்கவும் – கண்டிப்பாக உங்கள் ரத்த ஆழுத்தம் ஒரு பத்து புள்ளிகளாவது இதை படிந்தநாளில் குறையும்.

When Dr.Santosh Babu (IAS), Managing Director of ELCOT invited me to present in this year CETIT Conference, I had not known much about the event. Then searching on the Internet, I learned that “CETIT 2010 is the second year of the conference-cum-exhibition on e-Governance organized by FICCI in association with ELCOT. CeTIT claims to provide an opportunity to take stock of the practice and the promise of digital technologies on e-Governance”. This certainly sounded interesting, so here I am.

This year program happened yesterday and today in Chennai Trade Centre. I presented on the topic of “Relevance of Unicode to e-Governance”, this was part of the session on “Back Office” Chaired by Prof.M.Anandakrishnan (Chairman, IIT Kanpur).

In my brief talk (~10 Mins) I was keen that I didn't confuse audience with too much engineering detail on Encoding. At the same time I wanted to demystify Unicode and what it is, importance of a single uniform encoding, where we are in terms of acceptance of Unicode by various State Governments & Govt. of India. That I think I achieved.

Today in Hindustan Times Mint business paper there was an article on recently concluded Tamil Internet Conference 2010 and it included a quote and information from me. The article titled “Mixing Tamil and tech to book computing” was done by Ms.Niranjana Ramesh, who interviewed me some time back and we had a good discussion stretching for few hours. இது சென்ற ஆண்டு சென்னை புத்தகக்காட்சியில் நான் வாங்கிய புத்தகம். எப்படி இருக்குமோ என்று தயக்கத்துடன் தான் வாங்கினேன்.  (உண்மை) கதை என்பதால் சன் டிவியின் ‘நிஜம்’ போல மொக்கையாக இருக்கும் என்று சந்தேகத்தோடு படிக்க தொடங்கினேன். புத்தகத்தை படிக்க அரம்பித்து சில மணி நேரங்களிலேயே முடித்தும் விட்டேன். அந்த அளவுக்கு எளிமையான, சீரான நடையில் நல்ல சுவாரஸ்யமான ஒரு தொடக்கத்தோடு எழுதியுள்ளார் ஜோதி நரசிம்மன். இந்த அளவுக்கு ஒரு உண்மை கதையை அதுவும் தன் சொந்த கதையை, வெளிப்படையாக சமுதாயம் என்ன சொல்லுமோ என்று தயங்காமல் எழுதிய கலைவாணி அவர்களுக்கு வாசகர்களின் சார்ப்பில் என் நெஞ்சார்ந்த பாராட்டுக்கள்.  பாலியல் பற்றி புத்தகமாக இருந்தாலும், ஆபாச வர்ணனைகளோ, கதையின் ஓட்டத்திற்கு, நடக்கும் வாழ்வின் நிகழ்வுக்கு தேவையில்லாத எதுவும் இல்லை.

கண்டிப்பாகப் படிக்க வேண்டிய புத்தகம் என்று சொல்ல முடியாது, ஆனாலும் தமிழில் இது ஒரு நல்ல முயற்சி. பாராட்டுக்கள்.

Today I made a brief presentation introducing what is Unicode and how Tamil is encoded in UNICODE (தமிழில் ஒருங்குறி).

நான் பிறந்ததில் (70களின் நடுவே) இருந்து என் பள்ளி பருவம் முடியும் வரை ரங்கநாதன் தெருவில் தான் (எங்கள் லிப்கோ நிறுவனம் அப்போது அங்கே தான் இருந்தது) வசித்தோம், அதனால் படத்தின் கதைக்களம் எனக்கு நன்றாக தெரிந்த ஒன்று.   அதனால் இந்த படத்தை பற்றி கேள்விப்பட்டதில் இருந்து இதைப் பார்க்க விரும்பினேன். கடந்த பல மாதங்களாகவே நான் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் கேட்டுகும் ஒரு பாட்டு படத்தில் வரும் “அவள் அப்படி ஒன்றும் அழகில்லை” பாட்டு, அதனால் மேலும் கூடுதல் எதிர்ப்பார்ப்பு. இன்று தான் ஐநாக்ஸ்’ல் பார்க்க முடிந்தது. வந்து பலவாரங்கள் ஆன படத்திற்கு முக்கால்வாசிக் கூட்டம் இருந்தது வியப்பு – இயக்குனரை அதற்குப் பாராட்டலாம். புதுமுக நாயகன், நாயகி அருமையாக செய்துள்ளார்கள், தங்களின் பாத்திரங்களாகவே நம் கண்ணிலும் மனத்திலும் வந்துப் போகிறார்கள் – அவர்களுக்கு நல்ல எதிர்க்காலம் தெரிகிறது, அவர்கள் இல்லையே படம் தோல்வியடைந்திருக்கும்.

சென்னை ரங்கநாதன் தெருவில் எவ்வளவோ நடக்கிறது, எவ்வளவோ நபர்கள் இங்கே வந்து வாழ்க்கையில் ஓரளவுக்கு முன்னேறியிருக்கிறார்கள் (அனைத்தும் நல்லப்படியாக நடக்கிறது என்று நான் சொல்லவேயில்லை) அவர்களை எல்லாம் பின்னுக்கு தள்ளிவிட்டு இயக்குனர் ஒரு கடையில் நடக்கும் தவறுகளை மட்டும் குறியாக காட்டுகிறாரே என்று நமக்கு படுவதை தவிர்க்க முடியவில்லை.

இயக்குனருக்கு வாழ்க்கையின் மீது ஏன் இவ்வளவு வெறுப்போ, அவநம்பிக்கையோ தெரியவில்லை. என்ன தான் கிராமத்தில் (கிராமங்கள் எல்லாம் இப்போது தனியாக ஒதுங்கி ஒன்றும் இல்லை) இருந்து முதல் வேளைக்கு வந்தாலும் எதுவுமே தெரியாமல் யாரும் வருவதில்லை, இன்றைய இளைஞர்கள் வேலைக்கு வரும் போதே அல்லது வந்து சில நாட்களிலேயே  அவர்களின் உரிமைகள் அவர்களுக்கு நன்றாக தெரியும். அவர்களை ஒரளவுக்கு நல்ல முறையில் கடைக்காரர்கள் நடத்தி, நல்ல சாப்பாடு கொடுக்கவில்லை என்றால் அவர்கள் வேலைவிட்டு வேறு வேலைக்குப் போய் கொண்டே இருப்பார்கள், அது தான் எதார்த்தம், உண்மையும் கூட. இதை எல்லாம் விட்டு இயக்குனர் ஏனோ எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் ”ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன்” காலத்து அடிமைகள் போல மிகைப்படுத்தி காட்டியுள்ளதை மனம் ஏற்க மறுக்கிறது. ஏனோ இயக்குனரின் பார்வையில், கதையில் வரும் எல்லா பாத்திரங்களும் (நாயகன், நாயகி அவர்களின் நண்பர்கள் இருவரைத் தவிர்த்து) கெட்டவர்களகவே இருக்கிறார்கள் – அது அண்ணாச்சி ஆகட்டும், மேல்பார்வையாளராகட்டும், உடன் வேலை செய்யும் பெண்ணை காதலிக்கும் நபராகட்டும், தெருவில் இருக்கும் ஆட்டோகாரர்களாட்டும், தங்கச்சியை வீட்டு வேலைக்கு வைத்திருக்கும் மாமியாகட்டும். நாயகன், நாயகி இவர்களுக்காகவே பார்த்து பார்த்து தேடி தேடி கெட்டவர்கள் மட்டுமே அதிகமாக வருகிறார்கள், விதியும் விளையாடிக் கொண்டே இருக்கிறது, புரியவில்லை. முடிவிலும் ஏனோ ஒரு பெரிய இழப்பு, இயக்குனர் சோகமாக மட்டுமே இருக்க வேண்டும் அப்போது தான் படம் வெற்றி பெரும் என்று கங்கணம் கட்டி கொண்டு எடுத்ததுப் போல் தோன்றுகிறது.  Over Dramatizationஐ முழுவதுமாக தவிர்த்திருந்தால் இந்தியா அளவில் ஒரிரு விருதுகள் படத்திற்கு கிடைத்திருக்கும்.

கடையில் வேலை செய்பவர்களை மோசமாக நடத்தப்படுவதையும், அரசாங்கத்தை ஏமாற்றுவதைப் பற்றியும் இவ்வளவு கீழ்தரமாக கடையின் உறுமையாளரான அண்ணாச்சியை சித்தரிக்கும் ஒரு படத்தை முழுவதும் எப்படி அவர்கள் கடையில் எடுக்கவிட்டார்கள் “சரவணா ஸ்டோர்ஸ்” மற்றும் ”சௌந்தரப்பாண்டியன் ஸ்டோர்ஸ்”  என்பது தான் எனக்கு ஆச்சர்யம்!

செல்வராகவன் இயக்கத்தில் படப்பிடிப்பிலேயே பல காலம் பேசப்பட்ட படம் இது - ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன். கார்தி, ரீமா சென், ஆண்ட்ரியா, பார்த்திபன்  ஆகியோர் நடித்துள்ளார்கள். சரித்திரமும் நவீனயுகமும் சேர்ந்த கலவை என்பதால் நடிப்பது கடினம், ஆனால் அனைவரும் பாத்திரம் அறிந்து அருமையாக செய்துள்ளார்கள். கவர்ச்சியாகவும், தைரியமாகவும், அந்தக்கால இளவரசி போலவும், கத்தி சண்டை, துப்பாக்கிப் சுடுதல் என்று படம் முழுவதும் வந்து தன் நடிப்பு திறமையை வெளிப்படுத்தி இருக்கிறார் ரீமா சென் – அவரை நிச்சயம் பாராட்ட வேண்டும். அவருக்கு ஒரு அருமையான வாய்ப்பு இந்த படம், அதை நன்றாக பயன்படுத்திக் கொண்டுள்ளார். உண்மையில் படத்தின் நாயகன் அவர் தான். கார்தி பாத்திரம் அறிந்து அடக்கி வாசித்திருக்கிறார், இயக்குனர் இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் அடக்கியிருந்தால் கதைக்கு மேலும் வலுக்கூட்டியிருக்கும்.

செல்வராகவன் மற்றும் அவரின் குழுவின் உழைப்பு ஒவ்வொரு காட்சியிலும், விவரத்திலும்  நன்றாக உணர முடிகிறது.  தமிழில் கடைசியாக இப்படியான ஒரு படம் (சரித்திரத்தையும் கற்பனையும் கலந்து) எப்போது வந்தது என்று எனக்கு நினைவு இல்லை. Computer Graphicsஐ நன்றாக பயன்படுத்தியுள்ளர்கள், இதற்கு மேல் சிறப்பாக செய்ய ஹாலிவுட் அளவு பணம் தேவை, அதனால் இது போதும்.

படத்தின் குறைகள் என்று பார்த்தால்  ரொம்ப இழுத்துவிட்டார்கள், இரண்டு படம் பார்த்த மாதிரி ஒரு உணர்வு. இடைவேளைக்கும் அடுத்த பகுதிக்கும் துளிக் கூட ஒட்டாதது கதையின் பலவீனம். செல்வராகவன் தான் பார்த்த மூன்று, நான்கு ஆங்கிலப் படங்களை (Gladiator, Return of Mummies) ஒரே தமிழ் படத்தில் காட்ட முயற்சி செய்துள்ளதுப் போல தோன்றுவதை தவிர்க்க முடியவில்லை - என்னை பொருத்தவரை இது தான் படத்தின் மிகப் பெரிய பலவீனம். இதை தவிர்த்திருந்தால் பலக்காலம் பேசப்படும் படமாக இது அமைந்திருக்கும்.

எனக்கு படத்தின் கதை பெருமளவு புரிந்தது என்று நினைக்கிறேன்,  என் மனைவிக்கு சுத்தமாகப் புரியவில்லை (எங்கள் இருவருக்கும் இதனால் படம் முடிந்தவுடம் வாக்குவாதம்),  தமிழ் ரசிகர்களுக்காக இதில் இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் கவனமாக இருந்திருந்தால் வசூலை அதிகரித்திருக்கும்.

ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன் – பார்க்கலாம், ஆனால் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் உயிரோடு இருந்திருந்தால் ஏன் தன் படத்தின் தலைப்பை இதற்கு வைத்தார்கள் என்று சிறிது வருந்திருப்பார்.

தமிழ் படம் இன்று பார்த்தேன். முழுப்படமும் உங்களை கண்டிப்பாக வயிறு குலுங்க சிரிக்க வைக்கும். தமிழில் போதுவாக தமிழ் சினிமைவை, அதுவும் பிரபல நடிகர்களை நையாண்டி(Spoof) செய்யும் படங்கள் மிக குறைவு, அதுவும் வெற்றி பெறுவது இல்லை, ஆனால் இந்தப் படம் வெற்றி என்று தான் தோன்றுகிறது. அந்த வகையில் ஒரு நல்ல முயற்சி. மேலும் சிறப்பாக, கதையில் இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் கவனம் செலுத்திருக்கலாம், ஆனால் நையாண்டி படம் தானே என்று விட்டுவிட்டார் போல இயக்குனர்.

நாயகன் சிவாவின் நண்பர்களாக எம்.எஸ்.பாஸ்கர், வெண்ணிறை ஆடை மூர்த்தி, மனோபாலா ஆகட்டும், பாட்டியாக பறவை முனியம்மாவாகட்டும் ஒவ்வொரு கதாப்பாத்திரத்துக்கும் நடிகர்கள் தேர்வு பிரமாதம் (நாயகியை தவிர). அதற்காகவே  இயக்குனர் அமுதம் அவர்களை பாராட்டலாம்.  ஒரே பாட்டில் நாயகன் பணக்காரர் ஆவதாகட்டும், முடிவில் வரும் நீதிமன்றக் காட்சியாகட்டும்,  சினிமாப்பட்டி கிராமத்தின் அறிமுகமாகட்டும், மிதிவண்டியை சுற்றியே பத்து வயதிலிருந்து பெரியவன் ஆவதாகட்டும், வில்லன்களை எதிர்க்கும் ஒவ்வொரு காட்சியாகட்டும் எல்லாமே அருமை.

நாயகன் சிவாவுக்கும், இயக்குனர் அமுதம் அவர்களுக்கும் நல்ல எதிர்காலம் இருக்கிறது, அடுத்தப் படத்தையும் வித்தியாசமாக செய்தால்!

திரு.பத்ரி சேஷாத்ரி அவர்களின் வலைப்பூவில் படித்து விட்டு இந்த ஆண்டு சென்னை புத்தக கண்காட்சியில் வாங்கிய மற்றுமொரு புத்தகம் – “இனி இது சேரி இல்லை”. சென்னையில் சேரியாய் இருந்த ஒரு இடத்தை எப்படி சென்னை விலிங்டன் கார்பரேட் ஃபவுண்டேஷன் என்ற அமைப்பு சிறப்பாக மாற்றியமைத்தது என்பது தான் புத்தகம். நம் ஊரில் போதுவாக எப்போதுமே எதுவும் சரியாக செய்யவில்லை, ஏமாற்று வேலை என்பதைப் பற்றியே படித்து பழகிய நமக்கு இது ஒரு வித்தியாசமான புத்தகம் – எது நல்ல முறையில் தன்னார்வத்தில் வணிக நோக்கமின்றி நடைப்பெற்றது என்பதைப் பற்றி. வணிகரிதியாக அவ்வளவு வரவேற்பில்லாத இந்த மாதிரியான ஒரு தலைப்பை, தைரியமாக ஒருவித சமுக நலன் கருதி பதிப்பித்தற்கு நண்பர் திரு.பத்ரி அவர்களுக்கு தமிழ் வாசகர்கள் சார்பில் என் நன்றி.

சுத்தம், சுகாதாரம் மட்டுமில்லாமல் அரோக்கியம், வாழ்க்கை தரம், அடிப்படைக் கல்வி, சுயத் தொழில், குடிப்போதையில் இருந்து மீட்பு, முதியோர் கல்வி, சேமிப்பு – ஏமாற்று வட்டியிலிருந்து மீட்பு என்று பல வகையில் ஒரு ஒருங்கிணைந்த நடவடிக்கையாக இதை நூலின் ஆசிரியர் திரு.பைரவன் அவர்களும் ஃபவுண்டேஷனின் திரு. நாராயணன் அவர்களும் செய்துள்ளார்கள். மிகவும் பாராட்ட வேண்டிய முயற்சி, தொடர வேண்டிய முயற்சி.  

புத்தகம் ஒரு செய்தி தொகுப்பு என்ற முறையிலேயே பெருவாரியான பகுதியில் செல்கிறது. இதனால் படிக்கும் போதுப் பல இடங்களில் பொதுவான வாசகர்களுக்கு (என்னையும் உட்பட) ஒரு தொய்வு எற்படுவது உண்மை. தன்னார்வ நிறுவனத்தில் பணிபுரிவோர்களுக்கும், சம்பந்தப்பட்ட துறைகளில் உள்ள மாணவர்களுக்கும் இந்த புத்தகம் கண்டிப்பாக படித்து கற்றுக் கொள்ள வேண்டிய ஒன்று என்றால் மிகையல்ல.

இன்று தமிழ் ஆசிரியர் திரு.பெ.கி.பிரபாகரன் ஐயா அவர்களைப் பார்த்தப் போது தான் அவரின் தூண்டுதலில் நாங்கள் பதினொன்றாம் வகுப்பில் எடுத்தப் பேட்டி பள்ளி இதழில் வந்தது நினைவிற்கு வந்தது. அதை தேடி எடுத்தேன்.

இப்போது தான் மத்திய அரசில் பெண்கள் இட ஒதுக்கீடு என்று பேசுகிறார்கள், ஆனால் சார்க் நாடுகள் 1991ம் ஆண்டே பெண் குழங்தைகள் ஆண்டாக அறிவித்திருந்தது. இதைப் பற்றி மக்கள் சமுதாயத்திற்காகப் பாடுபடும் நல்லோர்களின் கருத்தையறிய முற்பட்டோம். எங்கள் பள்ளி செயலாளர், முதல்வர், கவிஞர் பொன்னடியான், தாமரைத் திரு ஜெயா அருணாசலம், எழுத்தாளர் அனுராதா ரமணன் ஆகியப்பலரை நாங்கள் நேரில் சென்று பேட்டி எடுத்தோம். அத்தொகுப்பு அந்த ஆண்டு (1991) எங்கள் பள்ளியின் இதழில் (Voice of Vailankanni) வெளிவந்தது. இப்படி ஒரு வலுவான தலைப்பை கொடுத்து கவிஞர்களை, எழுத்தாளர்களை நாங்கள் பயப்படாமல் கேள்விகள் கேட்கவும், அதைத் தெளிவாக எழுதவும் வைத்தவர் ஆசிரியர் திரு.பெ.கி.பிரபாகரன் அவர்கள் தான். எங்களிடம் கொடுத்துவிட்டு அவரே எல்லாவற்றையும் செய்யவில்லை, பேட்டியெடுக்கும் போது எங்களை நம்பி தனியாக தான் விட்டார், நாங்கள் தான் கடைசிவரைக் கட்டுரையை எழுதி முடித்தோம் – இது எல்லாம் இப்போது நினைத்துப் பார்க்கையில் எவ்வளவு சிறந்த வாய்ப்பு, பயிற்சி என்று விளங்குகிறது. அத்தொகுப்பை சுமார் இருபது ஆண்டுகள் கழித்து உங்களுக்காக இப்போது வருடியில்(Scanner) வருடி இங்கே தந்துள்ளேன்.

ஆங்கிலம் வழியாகவே முழுவதும் நான் கல்விக் கற்றாலும், எனக்கு ஓர் அளவிற்கு தமிழின் மேல் ஆர்வம் இருக்கிறது என்றால் அதற்கு முழுக்காரணம் என் மதிப்பிற்குரிய தமிழ் ஆசிரியர் (முகம்) திரு.பெ.கி.பிரபாகரன் ஐயா அவர்கள் தான். 

தி.நகரில் உள்ள சி.பி.எஸ்.இ. (C.B.S.E) பள்ளியான வேளாங்கன்னி மேல்நிலைப் பள்ளியில் (Shrine Vailankanni Senior Secondary School T.Nagar) தான் என் முழு பள்ளிப்படிப்பையும் படித்தேன் (L.K.G. to 12th standard). அப்போது எங்களுக்கு ஐந்து ஆண்டுகள் (7,9,10,11,12th Standard) தமிழ் ஆசிரியராக இருந்தவர் திரு.பெ.கி.பிரபாகரன் அவர்கள்.

பள்ளிப் படிப்பை முடித்தப்பின்(1992) ஒரிரு ஆண்டுகள் கழித்து ஐயாவை சந்தித்தோடு சரி, மீண்டும் இன்று தான் சந்திக்கும் வாய்ப்புக் கிடைத்தது. அவரின் வீட்டில் (பரிதி நிலையம், 1368, ஆறாவது செக்டர், 31ஆவது தெரு, சென்னை-600078) இன்று நானும் என் பள்ளித் தோழன் கோ.மணிகண்டனும் சேர்ந்து போய் பார்த்தோம். நலம் விசாரித்தோம், பழைய கதைகள் பேசினோம். அவருக்கு நான் எங்கள் லிப்கோ நிறுவனத்தின் பேரகராதி ஒன்றைக் கொடுத்தேன், ஐயா எங்களுக்கு அவரின் “மனத்தை விட்டகலாத கவிஞர்கள்” புத்தகத்தைப் அன்பளிப்பாகக் கொடுத்தார். மிக்க மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருந்தது.

1990ல் பத்தாம் வகுப்பு முடித்தவுடன் எனது ஆட்டோகிராப் புத்தகத்தில் ஐயா எழுதிக் கொடுத்ததை இன்று கண்டுப்பிடித்து படிக்கும் வாய்ப்பும் கிடைத்தது நெகிழ்ச்சியான நிகழ்வு.

”சீனா - விலகும் திரை” என்ற இந்தப் புத்தகம் திருமதி.பல்லவி அய்யர் (இவர் என்.டி.டி.வியில் பணியாற்றி போது நமக்கு எல்லாம் தெரிந்த முகம்) அவர்களின் “Smoke and Mirrors: An Experience of China” என்ற ஆங்கிலப் புத்தகத்தின் தமிழாக்கம். சாதாரணமாக ஆங்கிலத்தில் எழுதப்பட்ட நூலை ஆங்கிலத்தில் படிப்பது தான் ஆசிரியர் சொல்ல வந்ததை நாம் சரியாகப் புரிந்துக் கொள்ள முடியும் என்பது எனது கருத்து. ஆனால் கிழக்கு பதிப்பத்தின் கடையில் இந்த நூலைப் பார்த்தவுடன் பிடித்துவிட்டது, முக்கியமாக அதில் கேட்டு இருந்த  கேள்வி என்னை சிந்திக்க வைத்தது – “சீனாவைப் பற்றி நமக்கு என்ன தெரியும்? ஒன்றும் தெரியாது என்பது தான் உண்மை”.

பல்லவி அய்யர்  2002ல் இருந்து 2007வரை ஐந்து ஆண்டுகள் பேய்ஜிங்கில் வாழ்ந்த அனுபவத்தில் இந்தப் புத்தகத்தை எழுதியுள்ளார். மேலோட்டமாக சீனாவைப் பற்றிய நூல் அல்ல இது, அவர்களுடன் வாழ்ந்து, சீனா மொழியைக் கற்று அதைப் பேசி, சீனாவில் உள்ள இன்றைய தலைமறையினருக்கு பாடம் எடுத்த அனுப்பவத்தில் எழுதப் பட்ட நூல்.  பல்லவி அய்யரின் சீனா வாழ்க்கை அனுபவங்களோடு, சீனாவின் பல்வேறு மாநிலங்கள்/நகரங்களுக்குச் அவர் சென்ற பயண அனுபவங்களையும் சேர்த்து சேர்த்து  புத்தகம் நகர்வதால் ஆரம்பம் முதல் கடைசிவரைச் சுவை குறையவேயில்லை. ஆசிரியர் ஒரு இந்தியர் என்பதால், ஒரு இந்தியராக எனக்குப் படிக்கும் போது சீனாவைப் பற்றி தோன்றியப் பல கேள்விகளை ஆசிரியரே கேட்டு அதற்குப் பதிலும் சொல்லியிருப்பது இன்னும் நன்றாக உள்ளது.

கடைசியாக புத்தகத்தை முடிக்கும் போது இப்படி முடிக்கிறார் “இந்தியாவிடம் இருந்து சீனாவும், சீனாவிடம் இருந்து இந்தியாவும் கற்றுக்கொள்வதற்கு நிறைய விஷயங்கள் உள்ளன. ஒன்றின் பலம், மற்றொன்றின் பலவீனம்”.

இந்த புத்தகமும் நான்  இந்த ஆண்டு சென்னை புத்தகக் காட்சியில் வாங்கியது. புத்தகம் வாங்கிய இரண்டு வாரங்களிலேயே படித்து முடித்தது எனக்கு ஒரு சாதனை (சும்மா தான்) என்றால் அதற்கு முழுக்காரணம் நூலின் ஆசிரியர் பல்லவி அய்யர் மற்றும் தமிழில் (அருமையாக) மொழிப் பெயர்த்த திரு.ராமன் ராஜாவும் தான்.

இப்போதெல்லாம் அதிகமாக பூசணி பூ விட்டின் முன் கோலத்துல தென்படுவது இல்லை. இருந்தும் மார்கழி மாதத்தில் தினம் என் அம்மா எங்கிருந்தாவது பூசணிப் பூவையும், அதை வைக்க (Stand மாதிரி) மாட்டுச் சாணியையும் வரவழைத்துவிடுவார். இன்றுக் காலைப் போட்ட கோலம், அதில் நடுவே அழகாக பூசணிப் பூ (Yellow Melon Flower).

இரா.முருகன் அவர்கள் எழுதிய கிழக்கு பதிப்பகத்தின் “மூன்று விரல்” புத்தகத்தைப் படித்ததில் இருந்து நான் அவரின் ரசிகராகவே ஆகிவிட்டேன். கடினமான ஒரு விஷயத்தை மிக இயல்பாக நகைச்சுவையோடு சொல்லும் அவரின் பாணி எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்துள்ளது. ஆதலால் இந்த ஆண்டு சென்னை புத்தகக் காட்சிக்கு சென்றவுடன் நான் நேரே சென்றது என் நண்பர் திரு.பத்ரி ஷேசாத்ரி அவர்களின் கிழக்கு பதிப்பத்தின் கடைக்கு தான். பத்ரி கூறிப்பிட்டார் இரா.முருகன் இதுவரை கிழக்குக்கு நான்கு புத்தங்கள் எழுதியுள்ளார் என்று – உடனே என்னிடம் இல்லாத மீதம் இரண்டு புத்தங்களை வாங்கிவிட்டேன். அதில் ஒன்று தான் “லண்டன் டயரி”. வாங்கி ஒரிரு நாட்களிலேயே படித்தும் விட்டேன். இதை படித்தயுடன் எனக்கு தோன்றியது - ஆங்கிலத்தை விட என்னால் தமிழ் புத்தங்களை வேகமாகப் படிக்க முடிகிறது என்று.

லண்டன் டயரியில்  லண்டனின் சரித்திரத்தை ரோமானியர்களின் ஆரம்ப கால ஆட்சியிலிருந்து  நமக்கு தெரிந்த விக்டோரியா மகாராணியின் ஆட்சி வரை சுவாரஸ்யம் குறையாமல் சுருக்கமாக சொல்கிறார் ஆசிரியர். சரித்திரத்தை ஒரேயடியாக சொல்லிக் கொண்டு போகாமல், ஒவ்வொரு பகுப்பிலும் ஒரிரு பக்கங்கள் எழுதிவிட்டு தற்கால லண்டனுக்கு வந்துவிடுகிறார். அதில் ஒரு சுற்றுலாபயணியின் கண்களுக்கு தெரியும் அழகான லண்டனைப் பற்றி நம் கண்முன்னே துல்லியமாக படம்பிடித்து காட்டியுள்ளார் திரு.இரா.முருகன்.

புத்தகத்தின் விமர்சனத்தில் சொல்லியிருப்பது மிகப் பொருத்தம் “உதடு விரிந்த புன்னகை குறையாமல் லண்டனின் சரித்திரத்தை உள்வாங்கவும், உட்கார்ந்த இடத்தில் இருந்தபடியே லண்டனின் குளிரை உணரவும் செய்கிறார் இரா. முருகன்”

இன்று நான் “தமிழ்  இணையம் - வளர்ச்சியும் வரலாறும்” என்ற தலைப்பில் ஒய்.எம்.சி.ஏ.பட்டிமன்றம் நடத்திய கருத்தரங்கத்தில் பேசும் வாய்ப்புக் கிடைத்தது. சென்னை உயர்நீதிமன்றத்தின் எதிரில் அமைந்துள்ள தொன்மைச்சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த ஒய்.எம்.சி.ஏ.கட்டடத்தில் அதன் எசுபிளனேடு கிளையின் இலக்கியப்பிரிவாகிய ஒய்.எம்.சி.ஏ.பட்டிமன்றம் நடத்திய இக் கருத்தரங்கம் சிறப்பாக நடைபெற்றது. தமிழ் அறிஞர்கள்/புலவர்களையும் தமிழ் தகவல் தொழில்ஙட்ப வல்லுனர்களையும் இணைக்கும் ஒரு முயற்சியாக இதை நான் நினைக்கிறேன்.

உத்தமம் செயற்குழு உறுப்பினரும் ஒய்.எம்.சி.ஏ.பட்டிமன்றத்தின் துணைத் தலைவருமாகிய மறைமலை இலக்குவனார் வரவேற்புரை வழங்கினார்.அவர் தமது வரவேற்புரையில் உத்தமம் அமைப்பைப் பற்றி ஓர் அறிமுகம் வழங்கியதுடன் கணிப்பொறி வல்லுநர்களுடன் தமிழ் அறிஞர்களும் இலக்கியப்படைப்பாளிகளும் இணைந்து செயலாற்ற வேண்டியதன் தேவையையும் வந்துள்ள விருந்தினர் பற்றிய் அறிமுகத்தையும் வழங்கினார்.

தலைமையுரை வழங்கிய சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் தமிழ்மொழித்துறைத்தலைவர் முனைவர் ந.தெய்வசுந்தரம் தமது தலைமையுரையில் தமிழ்க்கணினியுலகம் கண்டுள்ள வளர்ச்சியையும் இன்னும் இங்கே நிறைவேறவேண்டியுள்ள பணிகள் கடல் போல் பரந்துகிடப்பதையும் எடுத்துக் கூறினார்.

உத்தமத்தின் பொருளாளர் தில்லைக்குமரன் அவர்கள் தமது உரையில் தமிழர்கள் இன உணர்வும் மொழி உணர்வும் கொண்டு ஆற்றவேண்டிய சூழலையும் தமிழ் இணையம் இவ்வகையில் ஆற்றிவரும் பணியையும் தமிழுலகம் ஒன்றுபட்டுச் செயற்பட்டால் மிகப் பெரும் மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்கலாம் என்பதையும் அவர் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

அடுத்து  பேசிய நான் (தி.ந.ச.வெங்கடரங்கன்) அச்சுருவின் தோற்றமும் வளர்ச்சியும், ஒருங்குறி என்றால் என்ன, உலகமொழிகள் அதில் பங்கு கொள்வது எவ்வாறு, தமிழ் ஒருங்குறியில் பெற்றுள்ள இடம்/விதம், ஏனைய மொழிகள்-குறிப்பாகச் சீனமும் சப்பானியமும்-ஒருங்குறியில் பெற்றுள்ள இடங்களுக்கும் தமிழ் பெற்றுள்ள இடங்களுக்குமான வேற்றுமை, விசைப் பலகை என்பது யாது, குவெர்ட்டி (QWERTY) என்றழைக்கப்படும் ஆங்கிலமொழிவிசைப்பலகையின் அமைப்புக்கும் தமிழ்மொழி விசைப்பலகைக்கும் வாய்ந்த வேற்றுமைகள் எவை, இன்னும் நாம் அடையவேண்டிய இலக்குகள் யாவை, கணினியை முழுமையும் தமிழ் ஆளும்வகையில் இன்னும் என்னென்ன செய்யவேண்டியுள்ளது, மின் - அரசாங்கம், விளம்பரம், கணினி விளையாட்டு ஆகியவற்றின் மூலம் பெறப்படும் நன்மைகள், மொழிபெயர்ப்பில் கணினியைப் பயன்படுத்தும் வகையில் செய்யவேண்டிய முயற்சிகள், பேச்சு-எழுத்து, எழுத்து-பேச்சு மடைமாற்றம் செய்யப்பயன்படும் மென்பொருளின் தேவை மற்றும் வருடி OCR), பிழைதிருத்தும் மென்பொருள் ஆகியவற்றில் நாம் அடையவேண்டிய இலக்கு ஆகியவை குறித்து எளிமையாக (என்று எண்ணுகிறேன்) பேசினேன். இதன் ஒளிப் பதிவைக் கீழே பார்க்கலாம்

உத்தமம் அமைப்பின் தோற்றம், வளர்ச்சி, இதுவரை நடத்தியுள்ள மாநாடுகள், உறுப்பினராகச் சேர விரும்புவோர் அறிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டிய செய்திகள் ஆகியவற்றை உத்தமத்தின் செயலர்-இயக்குனர் கவியரசன் பேசினார்.

This year Tamil Internet Conference 2009 is happening in City of Koeln, Germany from October 23-25, 2009.TIC is annual Technical conference on Tamil IT topics organized by INFITT (உத்தமம்) in which I proudly serve as Vice-Chair currently. Tamil Internet Conferences of INFITT has been held earlier in Chennai (1999,2003)Singapore (2000, 2004), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2001) and in San Francisco, California (2002). TIC 2009 will be the first conference to be held in Europe.

TIC 2009 will be a technical conference devoted to discussing recent advances and challenges in Tamil Computing and Tamil Internet in general. To permit max. interaction, participation will be limited to 100-120 persons. We invite Tamil IT professionals worldwide to participate in this conference - only one of its kind devoted exclusively for Tamil. Please register immediately here to attend the event.

The TIC 2009 is being organized in close collaboration with the Institute of Indology and Tamil Studies (IITS) of the University of Koeln who will serve as the local host. IITS, headed by Prof. Ulrike Niklas is one of the major Tamil Studies and Research Center of Europe. வார விடுமுறை, என் சகோதரிகள் மற்றும் அவர்களின் பிள்ளைகள் வந்திருந்தார்கள். பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தப் போது திடிரேனயுதித்த யோசனையின்று சினிமாவிற்கு போகலாமென்று. எதிர்ப்பார்த்த மாதிரி சத்தியம்/ஐனாக்ஸ் திரையரங்களில் டிக்கெட் இல்லை. இணையத்தில் பார்த்ததில் மயாஜாலில் 3:10 காட்சிக்கு டிக்கெட் கிடைத்தது. காரை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு தி.தி. என்று மாம்பலத்திலிருந்து கிழக்கு கடற்கரை சாலை (30 கி.மி.) சென்றோம். எங்கள் பயணம் வீண் போகவில்லை, கமல் ஏமாற்றவில்லை. ஒரு நல்ல படத்தை அழகாக கொடுத்துள்ளார். ரொம்ப இழுக்காமல், முன்கதைகளுக்குச் செல்லாமல் ஒன்னே முக்கால் மணியளவில் ஒரு ஆங்கிலப்பட பாணியில் படத்தை கொடுத்துள்ளார் இயக்குனர் சக்கிரி டோளேட்டி. மோகன்லால் அலட்டிக் கொல்லாமல் தன் பாத்திரத்தைச் செய்துள்ளார். வசனம் சில வாரங்களுக்கு முன் நான் படித்து ரொம்பவே ரசித்த மூன்று விரல் புத்தகத்தின் ஆசிரியர் இரா.முருகன் தான், நச்சென்று ஆழமாகவும் ஆழகாகவும் இருந்தது. அனைவருக்கும் பாராட்டுக்கள்.

படத்தின் விமர்சனத்தை ஏற்கனவே பலர் தங்களின் வலைப்பூக்களில் என்னை விட நன்றாக சொல்லிவிட்டதால் அதன் முகவரிகள் இங்கே: Cable சங்கர் வலைப்பக்கம், Prakash வலைப்பக்கம், விவசாயி வலைப்பக்கம்.

உன்னைப் போல் ஒருவன் – நல்ல படம், பார்க்க வேண்டியப் படம்.

வாங்கி ரொம்ப நாட்கள் ஆயினும் போன வாரம் தான் இரா.முருகன் அவர்கள் எழுதிய கிழக்கு பதிப்பகத்தின் இந்த புத்தகத்தைப் (முன்று விரல்) படித்தேன். அரம்பித்த பிறகு முழுவதும் முடிக்கும் வரைக் கீழே வைக்கவே முடியவில்லை. அவ்வளவு சுவாரஸ்யம், யதார்தம்.

மென்பொருள் தொழில் சார்ந்தவர்களைப் பற்றி சாதாரண நடையில் எழுதியிருப்பது புத்தகத்தின் சிறப்பு. நானும் மென்பொருள் தொழிலில் இருப்பதால் கதாப்பாத்திரங்களின் கஷ்டங்களை உணர்வுகளை நன்றாக உணர முடிகிறது.

ஒவ்வொரு காட்சியும் என் கண் முன்னே நடந்ததுப் போல உணர்த்தேன். நான் நாவல்கள் அவ்வளவாக படிக்க மாட்டேன், இருந்தும் ரொம்ப ரசித்தேன்.

நாய் வளர்ப்போர் சங்கத்தின் மென்பொருளை லண்டனில் கதாநாயகன் நிறுவும் போது நடக்கும் நிகழ்ச்சிகள் நல்ல நகைச்சுவை, ரொம்பவும் ரசிக்கும் படியிருந்தது. கதையின் முடிவு முற்றிலும் எதிர்பாராதது.

தமிழ் தெரிந்த அனைத்து மென்பொருள் வல்லுனர்களும் படித்து மகிழ வேண்டிய ஒரு புத்தகம். 

ஒரு நல்ல தலைப்பை, ஒரு (பழைய) நல்ல படத்தின் பெயரை இப்படி ஒரு சுமாரான படமெடுத்து கெடுக்காமலிருந்திருக்கலாம்.

ஒரே கல்லூ‌ரியில் படித்தவர்கள் எட்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின் மீண்டும் அதே கல்லூரியில் ஒன்று சேர்கிறார்கள், அப்போது ஒரு கொலை முயற்சி, அதற்குப் பின்னால் முன்பு நடந்த ஒரு கொலை, காதல்.  படிக்க சுவாரஸியமாக தெ‌ரியும் இந்த‌க் கதை தான் ‘நினைத்தாலே இனிக்கும்’ - மலையாளத்தில் வெளியான கிளாஸ்மேட் படத்திலிருந்து எடுத்தது. ஒரு நல்ல கதையை எப்படி எடுக்கக் கூடாது என்பதற்கு மிகச் சிறந்த உதாரணமாக இந்தப் படத்தை சொல்லலாம்.

எட்டு வருடங்களுக்குப் பிறகு சந்திக்கும் கதாபாத்திரங்களின் தோற்றங்களில் எந்த மாற்றமும் இல்லை. ஷக்தியை ஏன் எல்லோருக்கும் பிடிக்கும், அவர் அப்படி என்ன சாதனை செய்த மாணவர் என்பது புரியவில்லை; அதனால் அவரது மரணம் எந்த தாக்கத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்தவில்லை; ப்‌ரியாமணி பாத்திரத்தோடு ஒட்டவேயில்லை; ப்‌ரியாமணி-பிருத்விராஜ் காதலில் எந்த ஒரு அழுத்தமும் அவர்களுக்குள் ஒரு இற்பும் தெரிவில்லை.

மொத்தத்தில் இந்தப் படத்தைப் பற்றி வெப்துனியவில் சொன்னதுப் போல - நினைத்தாலே இனிக்கும், நினைத்தாலே கசக்கும்

சன் பிக்சர்ஸின் அயன் இன்று பார்த்தேன். கதையென்று பார்த்தால் கடத்தல் மாபியாக்களின் வழக்கமான மோதல்தான். தமிழில் ஆக்‌ஷன் படம் பார்த்து எத்தனை நாளாச்சு என சொல்ல வைக்கும் வேகம், தமன்னா அழகாக வந்து போகிறார், கேமரா அபாரம் - – இவை தான் படத்தின் பலம். மற்றப்படி வழக்கமானப் படம், பல முறைப் பார்த்த கதை, பல காட்சிகள் நம்மால் முன்னேயே யுகிக்க முடிகிறது. சுர்யா இதை விட நல்லயொரு கதையை தேர்வு செய்திருக்கலாம்.

சென்னை நேப்பியர் பாலம் இருக்கிற இடத்துக்கு அருகே நரிமேடு என்று ஒரு குன்று இருந்தது என்றால் நம்ப முடியுமா?

I have written in the past about lack of Tamil unicode rendering support in all popular smartphones (iPhone, Windows Mobile, Nokia). This week one of my colleague who uses a Windows Mobile 6.0 (HTC branded) phone showed me SkyFire browser.  SkyFire is a free mobile browser that uses a proprietary proxy server technology to encode all Web contents (Text, Images, Videos, Flash, Silverlight) at their server that gets rendered in the Mobile client. Because of this technology the individual device limitations don’t affect their ability to render any language.

SkyFire is a great technology and seeing Tamil being rendering seamlessly makes me happy. But I am sceptical on the success of SkyFire – First, Mobile devices processing power are increasing every day to support iPhone Safari like true desktop browsers itself without need of a proxy server; Second, I don’t see a viable revenue model on how SkyFire will make money to run the operations especially the high server costs. Nevertheless a cool technology for now. If you have a Windows Mobile give it a try, better than waiting for IE 6.0 in Windows Mobile or WM 7.0

முதலில் கொஞ்சம் அதிகப்பிரசங்கித் தனமாக பசங்க செய்வதுப் போல தோன்றினாலும் படத்தில் ஒரு இடத்தில் கூட அபாசமோ, வன்முறையோயில்லை; மிக இயல்பான காட்சியமைப்புகள், சிறுவர்களின் நேர்த்தியான நடிப்பு. ஆசிரியராக வரும் நடிகர் அற்புதமாக செய்துயுள்ளார். முதல் பாதி கொஞ்சம் தொய்வடைந்தாலும், இடைவேளைக்குப் பிறகு படம் வேகம்.

நாயகன், நாயகி தங்கள் முதல் சந்திப்பிலிருந்து அவர்களுக்கு உதவுவது அவர்களின் செல்பேசி – இதைப் பார்க்கும் போது செல்பேசியால் ஒரு பத்தாண்டுகளிலேயே வாழ்க்கை எவ்வளவு மாறிவிட்டது என்று தோன்றியது (நான் காலேஜில் படிக்கும் போதுக்கூட இவ்வளவு எளிதாக சக மாணவிகளோடு பேச முடியாது, நண்பர்கள் நம்மை ஓட்டிவிடுவார்கள்).

What do you call in Tamil new technology trends like Twitter, Tweets and Micro blogging?. Today in a press meet where I talked about that these trends are catching up amongst Tamil writers, I was asked this question. I come home thinking and guess what I receive a Tweet from Dr.Na.Ganesan (NASA, USA) with the answer in his blog post, as if he has read my mind. 

முனைவர் நாக. கணேசன் நான் துணை தலைவராகயிருக்கும் உத்தமம் என்ற தன்னார்வ அமைப்பின் வட அமெரிக்கா தலைவராக உள்ளார்,  ஒருங்குறியில் மிக தேர்ச்சிப் பெற்றவர். என் ஐயத்திற்கு அவரின் விடைக் கீழே (வள்ளுவரிலிருந்து உதாரணத்தோடுக்கூடிய அவரின் அருமையான விளக்கம் அவரின் பதிவில் இங்கே):

ஆஹா. என்ன அற்புதமான தமிழ் வார்த்தைகளை கொடுத்துள்ளார் முனைவர் நாக. கணேசன் அவர்கள், அவருக்கு என் நன்றி. இது போல எனக்கு பிடித்த எளிமையான அழகான தமிழ் தகவல் தொழில்நுட்ப சொற்கள் சில:

இந்த வாரம் ஆனந்த விகடன் பத்திரிகையில் சத்குரு ஜக்கி வாசுதேவ் அவர்கள் ஒரு பெரிய விஷயத்தைப் பற்றி மிக அழகாகவும் அதே சமயம் மிக சுலபமாகவும் எழுதியுள்ளதைப் படித்தேன். அந்த விஷயம் - இருள். என்ன ஒரு பொருத்தம், இன்று காலை தான் எங்கள் யோகா வகுப்பில் எங்கள் ஆசிரியர் இருளுக்குள் கவனம் செலுத்திச் செய்யும் ஒரு தியானத்தை கற்றுக் கொடுக்க துவங்கினார்.

சத்குரு ஜக்கி வாசுதேவ் கட்டுரையில் கூறுகிறார்:

• “உயிரற்ற இருள் சவம் ... உயிருள்ள இருள் சிவம்”
• “இருள் தான் எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் மூலம்”. இருள் என்பது இயற்கை, வெளிச்சம் தான் செயற்கை. Coincidentally modern day science also talks high about the significance of Black Hole & Dark Energy in Big Bang theory.
• என்னை மிகவும் சிந்திக்க வைத்த வரி: “குரு என்பவர் இருளை விலக்க வந்தவர் அல்ல, இருளை விளக்க வந்தவர்!”

நேற்று எங்கள் யோகசன வகுப்பில் பேச்சுவாக்கில் நான் ஒரு பழமொழிச் சொல்லப் போக அது இந்த வலைப்பதிக்கு காரணமாகிவிட்டது. நடைமுறையில் இது போலச் சொல்லப்படும் பல பழமொழிகள் திரிந்து அவையின் உண்மையான அர்த்தங்கள் தொலைந்துவிட்டது என கீழுயுள்ள உதாரணங்கள் மூலம் எங்கள் யோக ஆசிரியர் கௌதம் சந்த் தெளிவாக்கினார்.

Recently I was checking out one of Nokia's entry level phone (Rs.2000) - Nokia 2626. The phone had "Hindi" letters printed on the keyboard, so I was doubtful whether it will have Tamil fonts. I launched the built-in browser and went to INFITT website (HTML page in Unicode), it said loading and processing for over 2 minutes; but I was delighted finally to see the page display properly in Tamil (you can see the image in right).

This means that this entry level device has 1. Unicode support, 2. Tamil Unicode font, 3. Rendering support for Indic languages in particular to Tamil.  This proves the present Unicode system for Indic languages does work even on the most basic/low-end devices and processors. So the reason Tamil Unicode is not yet supported widely on all phones especially high-end Windows Mobile, iPhone, Blackberry & Nokia Smartphones is not because of any technical limitations, but a lack of interest from the manufacturers to ship Tamil (Indic) support. It is mostly got to do with the wrong assessment by them, that all Smartphone buyers in India can read and care only about "English" and not their mother tongue.

Today is Maatu Pongal. The 3rd day of Pongal festival in Tamilnadu (India) is celebrated in honour of friends of the farmer - the cattle's. In villages this is celebrated with much funfare, but in cities like in Chennai it is limited to visit of cows to your houses. The below picture shows a beautifully decorated cow visiting my house today. In Hindu religion cows are sacred and it is believed that the goddess of wealth "Lakshmi" resides in the back of cows and offerings given to cow brings you blessings. Like every year, my son was super excited to see this but was too scared to give "banana" to the cow

இன்று ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை (விடுமுறை) என்பதால் நன்றாக மதிய உணவு அருந்திவிட்டு ஒரு குட்டித் தூக்கம் போடலாமா வேண்டாமா என்று சோம்பேறித்தனமாக இருந்தபோது தெரு முனையிலிருந்து சத்தம் கேட்டது.   ஜன்னல் வழியாக எட்டிப் பார்த்ததில் இரண்டு பேருந்துகளில் ”சென்னை சங்கமம்” கலைஞர்கள் எங்கள் (சென்னை மேற்கு மாம்பலம்) தெரு முனையில் சென்னை சங்கமம் தெருவிழா நடத்தவிருப்பது தெரிந்தது. அலறி அடித்துக்கொண்டு கேமராக்களும் கையுமாக தெரு முனைக்கு ஓடினேன்.

மதியம் ஒன்றரை மணியிலிருந்து இரண்டு மணிவரை அருமையான கிராமிய/பாரம்பரிய கலை நிகழ்ச்சிகளை வீட்டின் அருகையில் இலவசமாகக் கண்டுகளித்தோம். தப்பாட்டம், புலி ஆட்டம், கத்தி வித்தை மற்றும் சில கலைகளை அழகாகவும் சுருக்கமாகவும் செய்து காட்டினார்கள். சென்னை நகரத்திலேயே பிறந்து வளர்ந்த நான் இது போன்ற கிராமிய கலை நிகழ்ச்சிகளை இதற்கு முன்பு நேரில் பார்த்ததேயில்லை, சினிமாவில் பார்த்ததோடு சரி. என்னோடு என் மகனும் பார்த்து ரசித்ததைக் கண்டு நான் மகிழ்ந்தேன், என்னைப் போலவே அண்டையயலிலுள்ள மற்ற (அரைக்காற்சட்டை அணிந்த) அப்பாக்களும் தான். 

தெரு முனையில் ஓரிரு நிமிடத்தில் ஏற்பாடு செய்தாலும்,  ஏற்பாட்டின் எல்லா அம்சத்திலும் நேர்த்தி - பங்கு பெற்ற அனைத்து கலைஞர்களுக்கும் நல்ல வண்ணமயமான நேர்த்தியான புதிய உடைகள், சரியான வாத்தியங்கள் மற்றும் வந்திருந்த பேருந்திலிருந்த வண்ணமயமான பேனர் என சொல்லிக் கொண்டே போகலாம். அழிந்து வரும் இந்த கலைகளுக்கும் கலைஞர்களுக்கும் இந்த நிகழ்ச்சிகள் நிச்சயம் நல்ல ஒரு ஊக்கம். இதற்காகவே  ”சென்னை சங்கமம்” நிறுவனர்களுக்கும் அவர்களுக்குப் பொருளதவி செய்யும் தமிழக அரசையும் மற்றும் விளம்பரதாரர்களையும் பாராட்டவேண்டியது அவசியம். இவைத் தவிர நான் கவனித்த சில நல்ல அம்சங்கள் – மக்களை அழைக்க/கவர ஒலிப்பெருக்கி பயன்படுத்தாமல் விதூடகனை வைத்து சிறுவர்களைக் கவர்ந்தது, காவலர்கள் வராமலிருந்தது, மக்கள் ஒழுங்காகச் சத்தமிடாமல் நின்றது.

இப்போதுள்ள நிலையில் நகரங்களில் இது போல ஒரு நிகழ்ச்சி நடந்தால் தான் தெருவிற்கு வருகிறோம், இல்லை என்றால் நாம் எல்லோரும் கதவையடைத்து வீட்டினுள்ளேயே இருந்துவிடுகிறோம் - அண்டையயலில் யார் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்றோ அவர்கள் முகங்களைப் பார்க்கக்கூட வாய்ப்புகளில்லை. அப்படியே பார்த்தாலும் உதவி கேட்டுவிடுவார்களோன்று பார்த்தும் பார்க்காமல் சென்றுவிடுகிறோம்.  

நிகழ்ச்சியில் நான் எடுத்த ஒளிப்பதிவை மேலேயும், எடுத்த எல்லாத் தெளிவான வண்ணப் படங்களை இங்கேயும் காணலாம்.

Like any other Indian I was devastated at what happened in Mumbai on 26th Nov 2008. Watching Television over the last 4 days it was a mixed feeling of Anger, Scare, Sorry & Disappointment. I pray for the departed souls to rest in peace and for almighty to give strength to the families that lost their loved ones and for the injured for speedy recovery. 

Since lot has been reported about the incident around the world, I was not sure whether I too should be writing about this. Then I decided that every Indian has to raise his/her voice against this atrocity, so here is what I feel on this:

• Indian Political establishment, the government & the intelligence machinery have failed spectacularly once more. There is no point in blaming the present Central or State Government for this, this is a failure of government at all levels over the last two decades - ever since the fall of "Cold War" and the raise of "Global Terrorism"
• Over the decades, time and again Indian Government and Indian Civil Service have shown by their non-action that they don't value the loss of a life especially of a ordinary Citizen. For them only the lives of Political Party Chiefs, Ministers and their immediate family members lives have any value
• I just can't come to terms on how easy it was for the Terrorists to come into India without being stopped and how easy it was for them to smuggle huge arms and ammunitions. Does India have any coastal guards and navy worth mentioning?
• I am glad that there was no negotiation or surrender were made. Unlike previous incidents were our government was ready to bend backwards rightaway in the Indian Airlines - Khandagar incident in 1999 or in the Rubaiya (daughter of then India's Home Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed) incident in 1989. In the Mumbai Incident now, it appears that the security forces were given a free hand to do their job, which they have done
• Though I felt the operation by security forces was very slow, we should commend them for handling it skillfully with no civilian lives lost due to their firing, for not using disproportionate gun power and for capturing one terrorist alive
• I am at loss on why our security forces don't seem to be taking advantage of technology. For two days they kept saying they don't know the number of terrorists and where they are inside the buildings. Why didn't they use any Infra-Red Scanners, Motion Detectors, Satellite Sensors and the other modern fighting gadgets we see the American Armed Forces using skillfully in Iraq?. Does Indian Armed Forces have any of these or just like everything else in Indian Government was the budgets allocated for these swindled by Corruption?
• Without these modern gadgets how does Indian Armed Forces dream about fighting even a conventional battle - with the changing world order wars are fought nowadays in Cities and not in deserts. Are these gadgets too expensive for India to buy, I don't think so especially when treasury can spent US$14 Billion (INR 70,000 Crores) on the famous farm waivers and for issuing government bonds for subsidizing "Fuel" - both of which yielded Political capital
• Though it is purely symbolic I still welcome the resignation of Central Home Minister Mr.Shivraj Patel
• Though I don't agree with American & George Bush policies on their International Policies and Iraq War. Still due credit should be given to them for protecting their country (USA) in the last 8 years. After the devastating 9/11 there have been no major Terror Attacks with in the United States. In a sense they skillfully moved the battlefield of the Global war on Terror from being within USA borders to outside USA
• As an Indian, I feel ashamed that we still don't have any Crisis Management Infrastructure in India as Mr.Ratan Tata rightfully pointed out. We don't even have the basics like a US "911" helpline in India. I am not sure how many people who got stuck inside the hotels knew who to call for help - I certainly don't know
• India needs all the help it can get especially from US, Israel and other countries with huge expertise on fighting terror. Now is not the time to trumpet how great Indian Scientist are, or on how great our technology is, or being self-reliant, etc. But I am afraid our civil service will ensure this opportunity is missed to work with the world to our advantage by their outdated bureaucracy. A fine example of this happened today when the FBI was detained for hours in Mumbai Airport 

One of my friends sent me a nice email summarizing on what he feels will happen from here which is worth reproducing here on his own words: "I really don't want any more cries of "Indian resilience", peace and harmony. Indian resilience is nothing but casual indifference if not directly affected. We'll go back to watching our stupid soaps and reality shows once the real-life "reality show" of the terror attacks are over. A few discussions over dinner and drinks and we're done. We're mostly peaceful and harmonious people - but the ones massacring us aren't. So these kind of displays don't really do anything. What we need now is a strong government with a strong anti-terror law. One that can have the guts to take out terrorists wherever and whoever they are...Till then, I will remain cynical and angry"

Having said all this I am still an optimist at heart and that is the reason I have a photograph of the NSG team on the start of this post. Finally, I salute the brave men and women from Mumbai Police, National Security Guards & Army who lost their lives in the battle.

போன சனிக்கிழமை குடும்பத்தோடு நாங்கள் ஸ்ரீமுஷ்ணம் கோயிலுக்குச் சென்று இருந்தோம். ஸ்ரீமுஷ்ணம் என் பாட்டியின் பிறந்த ஊர். ஆனால் இதுவரை நாங்கள் பலர் அங்கே போனதில்லை. இந்த முறை உறவினர் ஒருவர் அழைப்பை ஏற்று அங்கே போயிருந்தோம், நல்ல தரிசனம் கிடைத்தது.

I am glad to be doing this post. Our INFITT Chair Dr.Kalyanasundaram has been awarded the prestigious "Sundara Ramasamy Award for Tamil Information Technology" on 18th May, 2008, in a function held at the University of Toronto, from the Canadian Tamil's initiative TAMIL LITERARY GARDEN. Sundara Ramasamy (Sura) award citation mentioned few of Dr.Kalyan's numerous contributions in the area of Tamil fonts, development of font encoding standards such as TSCII, Project Madurai and INFITT. Pioneer Dr. K. Srinivasan of Montreal was the first recipient of this award last year.

It was one of several Awards given out that day. Well known Tamil writer and translator Lakshmi Holmström received the main "Lifetime Achievement Award for 2007", also known as Iyal Virudhu. Prof. George Hart III of Univ. Califoria, Berkeley and Mr. Padmanabha Iyer of UK were earlier recipients of the "Iyal Viruthu" awards.

எனது நண்பர் திரு. சிவாபிள்ளை சமீபத்தில் ”மொழிகளுக்கான ஐரோப்பிய விருதை” பெற்றுள்ளார். அவரை பாராட்ட லண்டனிலுள்ளத் தமிழமைப்புகள் ஒரு விழாவை போன வாரம் மிகச் சிறப்பாக கொண்டாடினர். அவர்களுக்கு என் மனமார்ந்த நன்றி!

இன்றைய தினத்தை மத ஒற்றுமை நாள் என சொல்ல வேண்டும் போலிருக்கிறது. இன்று அனேக மதத்தினரின் பண்டிகைக்கள் நடைப்பெறுகிறது - இஸ்லாமிய மிலாடி நபி, கிறுஸ்துவ புனித வெள்ளி, இந்துக்களின் பங்குனி உத்திரம், வட இந்தியர்களின் ஹோலி. உலக ஒற்றுமைக்காக நாம் அனைவரும் பிராத்தனை செய்ய இதுவே சிறந்த நாள் போல்.

The most common question I get about Tamil Unicode / Tamil IT is how do I input Tamil text in Windows?.  Over the years my answer has varied and if you ask others it certainly varies between individuals and their choices. There are plethora of choices now available:

1. My first in the list will be Murasu Anjal. If you are using Windows 2000 or older this is the best software out there. Rock Solid and supports multiple keyboard formats, has convertors for various encoding and the paid version ships with high-quality Tamil Fonts. Unfortunately my good friend Muthu Nedumaran hasn't updated Anjal for Windows Vista and x64 platform.
2. Inbuilt IME in Windows 2000, 2003, XP & Vista. The upside to this is that OS out of box solution and downside it supports only ISCII layout.
3. Microsoft's Indic IME 1 (v5.0) from BhashaIndia.com. The upside is that it supports multiple keyboard styles, downside it is buggy and not works in all software.
4. Keyman software and plug-ins for Tamil. The upside is that Keyman is a very popular IME framework that support hundreds of languages. Downside the plug-ins are made by individuals as voluntary effort and may not be without errors.
5. E-Kalappai - This is another variation of Keyman and is widely popular in blogosphere.
6. Azhagi - Works well, supports multiple keyboard formats. Unfortunately only the paid version supports input into Microsoft Office and other applications.
7. Finally, this is what I am using nowadays - NHM Writer. This software is from my another friend Badri Seshadri's publishing firm New Horizon Media. Thanks to NHM you have a free Tamil Keyboard Software (less than 1MB download) that works in Windows XP, 2003, Vista & Vista x64. It works across applications as it uses Windows Text Services Framework (TSF)

ரஜினி நடித்த பழையப் பில்லா படத்தை நீங்கள் ஏற்கனவே பார்த்திருந்தால் தயவு செய்து இந்தப் படத்தைப் பார்க்காமல் இருந்து உங்கள் பணத்தை மிச்சம் செய்யலாம். இயக்குனர் விஷ்ணுவரதன் ஒன்றைக்கூட மாற்றவில்லை - சுத்த ஈ அடிச்சான் காப்பி.

நான் கொடுத்தக் காசுக்கு ஒரே ஆறுதல் - கறுப்பு உடையில் நயன்தாரா அழகாக வந்து போகிறார், சண்டை காட்சிகளில் வேகமாக செய்து அசத்துகிறார். எவ்வளவு யோசித்தாலும் இதைத் தவிர வேறு ஒன்றும் ஞாபகம் வரவில்லை.

I have been a member of an organization called INFITT from its inception around 2000. INFITT (International Forum for Information Technology in Tamil) a global, non-governmental, non-profit organization registered in California, USA. In Tamil known as "உத்தமம்" (உலகத் தகவல் தொழில்நுட்ப மன்றம்). Its main objective is to promote Tamil computing worldwide by bringing together professionals of Tamil IT, enthusiasts, Research Scholars and ordinary Tamils, so that Tamils can enjoy the benefits of all IT developments natively in Tamil environment.

Over the years I have participated in various working groups and activities of INFITT. Last year I was nominated as Chair to WG02 (Working Group 2 working on Tamil language related items with Unicode) and as Interim Vice-Chair. I am happy to write that now in 2008, we have successfully completed our elections at all levels (General Council and Executive Council) in a professional & transparent manner. I am honoured by the members for electing me unanimously to serve as their Vice-Chair for the period 2008-2009. I would like to thank all the members and Chair Dr.Kalyan for this honour through this post.

சுமார் இரு வாரங்களுக்கு முன்பு மக்கள் தொலைக்காட்சியில் என்னை பேட்டி எடுத்தார்கள். ஒரு இருபது நிமிடங்கள் ஒடிய இந்த பேட்டியில் என்னால் முடிந்த அளவுக்கு பிறமொழி கலக்காமல் தமிழியில் பேசினேன். எனக்கு தாய்மொழித் தமிழ் என்பதால் தமிழில் பேசுவது கடினமே அல்ல. ஆனால் அலுவலுக்குக்காக தொழில்நுட்பங்களை ஆங்கிலத்திலேயே பேசிப்பழகியதால், தமிழில் கணினி மற்றும் செல்பேசி முன்னேற்றங்களைப் பேசுவதில் சிறு தயக்கம் அவ்வளவு தான் .

One of my good friend and well wisher is Mr.Siva Pillai, Computer Officer of Goldsmiths College, UK. It is interesting on how we got acquainted. That was way back in 1996/97 when we were both members of a Tamil IT Interest email group. Then in 1998 when I visited London I was treated to be a guest in Siva's house. From there over the years our two families have become good friends.

Coming back to this post, I am happy to learn last week that Siva has won a well-deserved award - it is a European Award for Languages for this year. This was for his work on the Tamil Primary Language and Family Learning Project which has made a significant impact on parental involvement in education and learning of the Tamil language in the Downham (UK) area.

People who know Siva including me are certainly not surprised for this well deserved award for him. Even at the age where he has grandkids, his energy levels have to be seen to be believed. Above all his passion to help children (குறிப்பாக புலன் பெயர்ந்த தமிழ் குழந்தைகள்) to learn Tamil language is infectious. He has several works to his credit on this topic, including the recent project for Learn Tamil - through English (Primary) were he helped the founders.

Many times I am asked on how to enable Tamil Unicode support (both display and Keyboard) in many Operating Systems. I have written posts on how to do with Windows, but today I found this well written article from Wikipedia that gives step by step instructions. The article includes steps for most Operating Systems including Windows, Mac and many variants of Linux and applications.

In Web today there are plethora of Encoding used for Tamil including TAB/TAM (Tamilnadu Govt. standard), TSCII (popular 8bit), TUNE and more. For each of these sites you need to download and install respective fonts, definitely a pain. Recently I found this Firefox Addon that aims to solve this problem. After downloading and installing this addon "Adhiyan" - press Alt-2 (for TSCII), Alt-5 (for TAB) and it changes the text in the page to Unicode. So without installing the respective fonts, you can read all the text in Unicode. Since it finds and replaces characters in the webpage, not all pages come out correctly. But still a very handy utility.

Many times people ask me on how to setup Non-English Languages (specifically Tamil or Hindi) in Windows. They get confused on the jargons - LIP/MUI, etc. So far either I demoed the whole thing to them in one of my presentations or referred them to Microsoft BhashaIndia website (Incidentally this was developed by Vishwak for Microsoft).

Now my good RD Colleague Scott Hanselman in his usual brilliance has posted this which demystifies the whole topic. Though he talks of Chinese Language, it is relevant to all non-english languages.

இது ஒரு விடுதலை மனப்பாங்கோடு உருவான மென்பொருள் ஆவணத்திட்டம். இதன் அடிப்படை கொள்கை வாசகம்: "ஒரு சமுதாய முயற்சியாக, முன்னோடியான பன்னாட்டு பயன்பாட்டிற்கு உகந்த , அனைத்து முக்கிய அடிப்படை செயலிகளிலும் இயங்கக்கூடிய அலுவலகப் பயன்பாட்டுச் செயலித்தொகுப்பை உருவாக்குவது மற்றும் இத்தொகுப்பின் அனைத்து செயல்பாடுகளையும் மற்ற செயலிகளிலும் பயன்படுத்திக்கொள்ளும் வகையில் திறவூற்று ஆணையின் கீழ் API களாகவும் XML சார்ந்த கோப்புப் படிவமாக அளிப்பது ஆகும்"

The above paragraph is taken from Tamil OpenOffice page, but this post is not on OpenOffice or its translation in particular. I have just taken this as an example to make few observations I see in many technical documents in Indic Languages. Most of these documents seems to be literal translation from English, done by a non-native speaker of the Indian Language in question. Somehow when you read these you don't get the feel of reading it in your mother-tongue (Tamil).

For example, I am not able to relate very well to விடுதலை  being used to mean "Freedom" (as in Free to do what you want in the Open Source sense of the word). I checked in LIFCO’s Great Dictionary for “Free” and it says “not restrained, not bound, சுயேச்சையான”. Instead of விடுதலை, சுயேச்சை seems to be more suited for Free.  Look at திறவூற்று being used to mean "Open" (Open API's) I would have preferred to have திறந்த. Also notice how the second sentence in the paragraph has about 39 words. Yes 39 words in one sentence - can't it be broken into easily digestible smaller sentences.

Google, Live Search and Yahoo! have all  been supporting Unicode text searches for years. Using them you can type a tamil word in Unicode and search. Google also gives you a Tamil User Interface if it detects your Browser Language setting to be"TA" or "TA-IN".

The constraint in using them were, you needed to have a Tamil IME pre-installed in your machine. Microsoft provides its IME for Tamil free with Windows XP, Vista and more through their BhashaIndia Website, my favourite has always been my good friend Malaysia Muthu Nedumaran's Murasu Anjal due to my bi-lingual typing, Apple bundles Anjal now with its Tiger OS and above, Fedora Core 6 bundles a free Tamil IME. But inspite of all this, if you need a no-install way to use Tamil search here is a new site that is build on top of Google API that allows Tamil Unicode input through English typing. Check it out.

Last month, while I was in America I was thrilled to learn that our title "How to Cook" (a South Indian Cook Book) featured in Saveur magazine. Saveur has listed How to Cook  as one of their top 100 Favorite List of foods, restaurants, drinks, people, places and things.

"How To Cook" is also available in Tamil Language as "சமைப்பது எப்படி" ?

If you are doing Webpages in Indian Languages like Tamil, Hindi, Punjabi, etc. and you want to embed dynamic fonts (fonts that are shown without being installed in your PC) you need two items:

1. A tool to create Dynamic Fonts (EOT) - this can be done by the free Microsoft WEFT Tool. Netscape's Dynamic Font technology Bitstream has been discontinued few years back.
2. Apart from WEFT, you need the actual Open Type fonts for the language. Unfortunately the fonts that ship with Windows XP or MS Office or MS BhashaIndia.com sites are copy righted and cannot be used without explicit license from Microsoft. So you need free Indian Language fonts to do this.

Govt. of India has released free Indian Language Software and Fonts CD for about 10 languages (and growing) in its ILDC.in website. You need to register here and download the fonts for the particular language you want.

இதைத் தவிர பாடல் சிடியை தினமும் வண்டியில் கேட்டப்பொழுது "நியுயார்க் நகரம்" பாடலும், "அம்மி மிதிச்சாச்சு" பாடலும் என்னை வெகுவாக கவர்ந்தது. இதில் "நியுயார்க் நகரம்" பாடல் முழுவதையும் கவிஞர் வாலி ஆங்கில கலப்பிண்றி (காபி பொன்ற ஒரிரு தவிர) இயல்பான தமிழில் எழுதியுள்ளார் - குறிப்பாக டயரியை (Diary)  நாட்குறிப்பு என்று அழகாக சொல்லியுள்ளார். ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் அந்த பாடலை கேட்கும்பொழுதும் ரகுமான் குரல் மனதை வருடாமல் விடவில்லை.  

The other day I wanted to watch a movie and searched for theatres in Chennai, where I can book tickets online. After about 10-15 mins, all I could find was just two theatres offering tickets online. Satyam Theatre and MayaJaal. I am not sure where in Online world the others are hiding. Continuing my story, I booked the tickets in MayaJaal and went for Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, starring Jyothika and Surya before marriage. The story of course was about a married couple and the emotions/bonding between them. A good to watch (though not great) movie, great photography and nice songs. When I was searching this movie in the Internet I was surprised to see a page for it in Wikipedia - these days everything is available in Wikipedia

Today in the supplement of one the tamil newspapers carried a piece that the English word "Cash" came from Tamil "Kaasu". "Kaasu" means smaller money - coins. European merchants travelling to India and China, have taken this word to Europe and it was later adapted as "Cash" in English.

The Tamil word in turn is believed to have its influence from Sanskrit word "Karsha" - which denotes weight of precious metals like Silver and Gold.

Anyway I am proud as a Tamilian that the most important word in English has its origin from my mother tongue

Today all FM Radios in Chennai were talking only about the birthday of Dr.ABJ Abdul Kalam - Hon'ble President of India. He is a great self-made man and I am big admirer of him. Born today (15-Oct) makes him a Libran (I do come up with such great discoveries once in a while ) and it is a great feeling to know I share the same Sun Sign with him.

As a responsible citizen, I casted my vote for the ongoing Localbody elections in Chennai (Tamilnadu). Though localbody elections are not high-profile, they have the most direct impact for citizens.  

Last 3+ parliament/assembly elections that I voted have been on Electronic Voting Machines, but I was surprised that today it was paper based.  May be they don't have so many voting machines.

I always admire Dr. A.B.J. Abdul Kalam, especially in his role as President of India. The admiration is more because he is a worthy man of the post and he got there through sheer hard-work and not by birth. I am also glad for him being the President, because with him all Indians now have a worthy role-model. Think about it, today if I were to show someone in public-life as a role-model (someone to see up to and grow like) to my 3 year old son, it certainly cannot be any of the existing Politicians (State and Central). Beyond a shade of doubt, it can only be Dr.Abdul Kalam.

And he is a big change influencer, but he doesn't try to change the grown-ups (he will not have the time to do it in his tenure) but he seeds good-thoughts and nurtures the young who in turn will grow to make the changes. His interest and energy for students is infectious. I salute you Sir for this.

Anyways, I started this post to write that the President's Website has recorded 1 Million (10 Lakhs) hits on a single day (August 15) and over 12.7 Million (127 Lakhs) hits in a month (August 2006). Indians are very patriotic especially on the Independence day, I suppose!.

I am delighted today – Hon’ble Minister Mr.Dayanidhi Maran (Govt. Of India, IT & Communication) mentioned my name in his speech today in Tamil New Encoding Conference (a.k.a TUNE).

The context is this - a conference that is happening currently today by Govt. Of India (Information Technology) and Tamilnadu Govt. to discuss about an Alternate 16-bit encoding for Tamil. I wrote about this alternate encoding a year back (TUNE) and my views on the same in my blog.

Since I came to know this conference earlier, this Monday (28th Aug) I wrote to Hon’ble Minister and IT Secy (TN Govt) to let them know about a common man views on this. When I sent it I had no expectations that this will be read by them (or) acknowledged by them due to the overwhelming responses they will be getting from different quarters.  Surprisingly on Wednesday, I got a call from Mr.Maran’s office (New Delhi) and minister spoke to me directly for a minute and acknowledged my letter – and he even summarized the issue I have raised precisely. He invited me to attend the event today. My honest appreciations to him for his amazing energy levels.

Today in the inauguration of the conference Hon’ble Minister while talking about the issue in question – both pro and cons and he mentioned my name. Saying that “Mr.Venkatarangan” has written to me with his views and I have invited him to say his views here. Thanks Sir!

Today's "The Hindu" carried an article about a work of ArchaeologyChannel on a Video Essay on Tamil. In a very professionaly done research work by two scholars M.V. Bhaskar and K.T. Gandhirajan, the history of Tamil is neatly depicted. Must watch for every Tamilian. I learned a few new things like "Jainism" influence in early Tamil.

As I wrote yesterday today is Tamilnadu State Elections and in the first hour of polling itself I voted. Polling booth opens at 7AM and if you go in the early hours, though there will be little crowd you can feel the excitement. So this is my preferred time to vote.

Since I have made up my mind last night itself, I just saw the chart outside for the number of my choice, then quickly spotted the number in the EVM (Electronic Voting Machine) and registered my choice.

One of the things I am proud of being an Indian is the vibrant Indian Democracy and Elections. We have enough problems which can serve as good reasons and excuses for not conducting free and fair elections. But in the 58+ years of independence one of the institutions which are living up to the founding fathers dreams is "Election Commission". This is an autonomous body with guaranteed funding and rights from Indian Constitution. In the last decade, with the path shown by a dynamic Chief Election Commissioner T.N.Seshan, the commission has achieved new heights in its efforts to guarantee free and fair elections. Though there are few anomalies reported like in every election – those are statistically and operationally insignificant for a country with 1.2 Billion People. Anyways, coming to the topic – the Tamilnadu State Election which is happening tomorrow May 8, 2006. The election is for electing 234 MLAs for the state assembly. Tamilnadu has been always decisive in its mandate, never an hung assembly has come here. This surprises me on how the people of the state come up with this united mandate every time – this is despite the state having a good percentage of illiterate voters, no serious issue based discussions, only personal accusations and personality based parties. This time the competition is said to be still tougher and my decision has been tough. But with few hours to go to the polling booth I seem to have made up my mind. Let us see whether I remain unchanged when I press the button

With the State Assembly elections round the corner, the Election commission of India has released a website - containing Tamilnadu Election Rolls in its entirety. This includes all 30 districts in Tamilnadu State and the entire text is in local language (Tamil). This is a remarkable step in transparency and checking bogus entries.

From a technical standpoint few points:

1) The site requires you to download and install a Tamil font to few the website. If you are a Non-Admin user like me, this is a problem. Here is a Windows Trick to get over this. Just click on the Font Download link, when the dialog box that says Open/Save/Cancel comes up, click Open. You will see a window similar to one below, please don't close it; instead leave it open and then switch to your IE/Firefox window and refresh the page. You should be able to see the text in Tamil. (This trick works because whenver you have a font file (TTF) opened in Explorer, Windows temporarily registers the font. When you close the font window, the font is removed).

2) I would have preferred the website to be in Tamil Unicode, instead of the proprietary 8-bit encoding of C-DAC.

IT and Computer Science Students doing their Engineering/Arts/Science Graduation courses can participate in a competition organized by KTS (Kani Thamizh Sangam) and Tamil Virtual University. It can be their final semester project but it should be in Tamil computing. The three best projects in 2006-07 will get cash prizes worth Rs.50,000. For details and application form, click here.

I feel the timing for this is very apt, as the commercial viability of Tamil Software projects is showing signs of finally picking up. OS vendors like Microsoft and Redhat are now supporting Tamil in many ways in their offerings. This week saw Tally (India's Leading Package Software) announcing availability of vernacular editions of its accounting software. For Tamil computing enthusiasts like me and others in INFITT and KTS this is great news - many have been working hard for last two decades for things like this to start happening and take computers to the masses in Tamilnadu. Though other commercial company’s will follow suit, in order to accelerate this trend and innovate in this it is very important to get the young minds excited and I believe this competition will certainly do that. My wishes to the organizers and the students.

In this connection KTS and TVU have organized a one day workshop – Tamil Computing Technology on February 25 at Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College. Topics include Tamil fonts and encoding, government initiatives in e-governance, tools and technologies, Microsoft's language applications, open source and job opportunities. As per this news Mr.Dayanidhi Maran Hon'ble Cabinet Minister for IT and Commn have announced yesterday that Govt. of India is developing free Indian Language Browser software in next 3 years. Though I don't see any value in Govt. spending its money just to develop UI in Indian languages (many already exists both from Open Source and from Microsoft), I welcome the subsequent idea. This browser software will be able to translate English based web content (WebSites and Pages) into any of the 13 Indian Languages - this feels a big void that exists today. None of the biggies (including Google or AltaVista) or any Open source project have so far concentrated on this need. Only very few percentage of our population understands English, but majority of the web content is in English and this will be a big blessing to them.

I pray for this effort to be successful - there are too many technical challenges in converting to Indian Language.

TUNE (Tamil Unicode NEw) is a proposed 16-bit alternate encoding scheme for Tamil developed by TVU (Tamil Virtual University) and KTS (Kani Tamizh Sangam). You can download the CD Content from here (24MB Zip File), that was distributed.

After nearly two decades of intense efforts by its members, Unicode is the single, universal character standard for all digital text. It has widespread implementation and usage. It is considered by technical experts as a fundamental technology that the digital world is very dependent on the stability and future extensions of the standard, even though it may not be apparent to you.

All major computing platforms today use only Unicode as the default encoding for all of their world-wide (including Indian Language) implementations in their latest releases. Popular Microsoft Products today have 100% support for Tamil texts based in Unicode, this includes Windows XP, Office 2003, .NET Framework, SQL Server & more. Other vendors too support Tamil in their latest products including Apple in OS 10.4 and Redhat in their RH 4.0. From a developers perspective Unicode is the only character coding standard support in all major technologies including .NET, Java, HTML, XML, Web Services, Regular Expressions, WML and more.

This state of maturity of Unicode took 2 decades of development. Today all languages co-exist in a single universal encoding without overlapping.

In this background, it is important to understand why TUNE is unnecessary.

1. It is important to understand that Unicode is only a character coding system designed for Interchange, say through file systems or through Internet. Almost all of every day applications like Web Browsing, email, Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Mobile Applications and Database works very well in Tamil (Unicode) just like in English using Unicode.
2. It is possible to do all computing tasks (Document creation, Printing, Searching, Sorting, Calculations, Spell checking, Database and more) in Tamil Language using present Unicode 4.x.
3. President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, in his letter to Tamil Internet 2004 conference last year (and to the conference in 2003 in Chennai), suggested Tamil search engines and internet application architecture as two key areas for the consideration of the language experts in the country and that these initiatives should adopt Unicode as the standard. It is heartening to note that today Popular Search engines including MSN Search, Google and Yahoo today support searching of Tamil Texts based on Unicode in the World Wide Web. Apart from Unicode they don’t support any other coding system used anywhere else in the world.
4. TUNE efforts has been solely limited to Tamilnadu (TVU/KTS) and hasn’t had any visible interest shown by rest of Tamil speaking nations. Any Global Tamil Text Standard has to have the endorsement of not only MNC’s but the various Tamil speaking country’s governments as well. This includes apart from Tamilnadu Government, Government of Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and others. We should remember that for these nations apart from Tamil, any coding scheme has to support their primary native language and say English. Even in India, Tamil needs to co-exist with other Indian languages. This is possible only with the usage of Unicode.  
5. The biggest challenge facing Tamil Computing world is not Unicode, but the fragmentation into groups of incompatible encodings. Many of the users are so confused with the plethora of 8-bit encoding schemes for Tamil (TSCII, TAB, TAM, ISCII and other proprietary schemes).
6. World-class software development companies (including those from and in India) rely on a time-tested standard (Unicode) that is governed by a body of Industry experts who are supported by leading vendors who implement or incorporate this into their products. With TUNE, the Tamil community will be made to depend on few developers – thus limiting access to the pool of world-class software.

So there is no need for “yet” another coding scheme. A new scheme will only further alienate Tamils in the Digital Era and will delay their integration into the world wide. What is needed is for all Tamil speaking nations to actively promote the usage of Unicode and encourage research on further refinement of the same.

Media is not new to me , I have spoken in All India Radio Chennai a few back on “இணையத்தில் வணிகம்”, during my school 12th standard participated and came second in a popular Chennai Doordharshan (TV) Quiz programme conducted by Prof. வா.வே.சு. But today was different, my first full 30 minute long TV Interview was live today in Sun News Channel from 5:30PM to 6PM. The Interview was hosted by Mr.Maalan of Sun News Channel. I was invited for the programme on Tuesday and I was informed the recording will be on the next day 3PM.

Anxious about my first Television Interview, I rehearsed on my demos, went to a Beauty Saloon and even had my laptop cleaned (the demos were to be shot from my Laptop Screen). But the actual recording was smooth, got over in less than 1 hour, first shoot itself got Okayed and above all Mr.Maalan made me feel at home during the whole interview. The interview was about the features of Microsoft Office Tamil – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook in Tamil.

Watch it this time!. A repeat of the same programme will be live this Thursday (5th May 2005).

Last Friday was a very special day for me, I did a demonstration on a stage that seated the "Who's Who?". The special event was one in which Microsoft India launched their Tamil Inteface Pack for Microsoft Office 2003. C-DAC with association with Government of India also released a free Fonts and Software Tools for Tamil CD. The event was hosted by Mr.Dayanidhi Maran - Cabinet Minister for IT & Communication and was attended by Dr.Kalaingar Karunanidhi - Former Chief Minister Tamilnadu, Mr.G.K.Vasan - TN Congress President & other distinguished attendees. From Microsoft side Mr.Ravi Venkatesan, Chairman, Microsoft India spoke about the virtues of Microsoft Office Indic Editions. He also said briefed about Microsoft's localization efforts through Microsoft Bhashaindia.com portal, which is aimed at taking IT to the Indian grassroots. I followed Mr.Ravi Venkatesan to the demo of Microsoft Office 2003 Tamil LIP in தமிழ். Giving presentations is not new to me, that too presentations on technology or in my mother tongue தமிழ் (Tamil). But doing the combination - a technical demo in தமிழ் needs good preperation. The time given was also too short (10 minutes), so I prepared for almost half-a-day to do this correctly. At the end, the presentation went so well, that I received applause for couple of times from the gathering and I was told that the minister also complimented my demo . Today I presented in Tamil Internet 2004 conference held at Singapore, on counting the number of letters/alphabets in an Unicode String. The problem is that if we use the string length functions included in major programming platforms we get only number of characters based on storage sizes. They don't understand the language and so don’t return letter (எழுத்து) count, instead they return only count based on character storage. You can read my earlier post for more on this.

To come up with a reusable solution to this problem, I presented today a paper in TI2004 with implementations in major programming platforms like Microsoft .NET, JavaScript and PERL.  My full paper (PDF) can be downloaded from here, the presentation (PPT) from here and the generic implementation with full source code for all the 3 platforms here (ZIP) .

Tamil Unicode has always been a issue of heavy discussion, today Badri Seshadri chaired the session well; gave oppurtunities to everyone to express their views without allowing the core focus to be lost or the time to exceed. இந்த வாரம் புதன் கிழமை நானும் நண்பன் இ.ரவியும், காரில் காஞ்சிபுரம் சென்றோம். சென்னையில் இருந்து காஞ்சி, சுமார் 75கி.மி., ஒன்றரை/இரண்டு மணி நேரமாகும். நாங்கள் காலை 9:30 மணிக்கு வீட்டைவிட்டு கிளம்பி, மதியம் 3:00 மணிக்கு திரும்பினோம். காஞ்சி செல்லும் சாலை, பிரதமரின் தங்க நாற்கர திட்டத்தின் கீழ் வருவதால், பல வழி (சில இடத்தில் ஆறு வழி, சில இடத்தில் எட்டு வழி) சாலையாக மாற்றும் பணி நடைப்பெறுகிறது. இதனால் பல இடங்களில் இடஞ்சல்கள் இருந்தும், வேலை முடிந்த சில இடங்களில் 100 கி.மி.க்கு மேல் செல்லமுடிகிறது. முழுப்பணி முடிந்தால் நாட்டிலுள்ள சிறந்த  சாலையாக இது வரலாம்.

திடிரென்று நாங்கள் காஞ்சிக்கு போன காரணம், இந்த வாரம் சக்தி விகடனில் காஞ்சி கைலாசநாதர் திருக்கோயிலின் சிறப்பைப் படித்து, கைலாசநாதரை தரிசனம் செய்யவே. திருக்கோயிலின் சிறப்பைப் படிக்க சக்தி விகடனின் இந்த வலைப்பக்கதிற்கு செல்லவும்.

காஞ்சி மடத்திலிருந்து 2 கி.மி.க்கு குறைவான தொலைவில் கோயிலுள்ளது (மடத்தையொட்டிய சாலையில் சென்று வலது திரும்பி நேர் செல்ல வேண்டும்). கோயில் மிக அழகாக இருக்கிறது, மிகச்சுத்தமாகவும் பரமரிக்கப்படுகிறது - நன்றி இந்திய அரசின் தொல்பொருள் துறை (ASI). கோயில் சுமார் 1600 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையானது. இன்றும் சில இடங்களில் அந்த பழைய வர்ணங்களை நாங்கள் பார்த்தோம் (கீழ் படம்).

நாங்கள் சென்ற சமயம் கோயிலில் வெளிநாட்டினர்களைத் தான் அதிகம் பார்க்க முடிந்தது (ஏன் நம் இந்தியர்கள் இங்கே வருவதில்லை?).  

கைலாசநாதரின் மூலச்சந்நிதி மற்றும் தினப்படி பூஜைக்கள், 1600  ஆண்டுகளாக ஒரே குடும்பத்தினர்களால் செய்யப்படுக்கிறதென்று எங்களுக்காக அர்ச்சனைச் செய்து, அழகான பிழையில்லாத பிரிட்டிஷ் ஆங்கிலத்தில் விளக்கிய கோயில் குருக்கள் சொன்னார் (1600 ஆண்டுகள், ஆச்சரியம் தானே?).

ஒரு விடுமுறை நாளில்,  சென்னையில் இருப்போர் சுற்றிவிட்டு வர காஞ்சி ஒரு அருமையான இடம். சென்றுவிட்டு வந்து, உங்கள் அனுபவத்தை கீழேயுள்ள கருத்து தொடுப்பில் எழுதவும். 

ஒன்று - நான் படித்தது (சக்தி விகடனில்):

வியாபாரிகளே, நிங்கள் உங்கள் கடையில்
எந்தப் படத்தை வேண்டுமானாலும் மாட்டுங்கள்
ஆனால் கலப்படம் மட்டும் வேண்டாம்

இரண்டு - நான் கேட்டது (Lion திரு.நடராஜன் சொல்லியது)

"நேற்று" என்பது உடைந்த மண் பானை
"நாளை" என்பது மதில் மேல் பூனை
"இன்று" என்பது அழகிய ஒர் வீனை

இந்த இரண்டு வாசகங்கள் உணர்த்தும் கருத்துக்கள் ஆழமானவை, ஆனால் சொல்லிய விதமோ எளிதானவை. இதை சிந்திக்கும் பொழுது, என்னை அரியாமலே, நான் உணர்கிறேன் "தமிழ் மொழி எத்தனை அழகானவை" என்று.

Many times while working in Indic Language web pages, I want to find the true character length of a string. .NET String.length() or its variants from other major programming languages, return character length based on storage space. They don't follow the language rules, so they are incorrect according to language grammar rules.

For example if the string is Tamil 'வி' or 'கொ', or Hindi 'मा', the returned length is '2'. Obviously this is incorrect, as per grammar it should be counted as '1' character.

To solve this problem, I have come up with this sample Windows Forms (.NET Framework 1.0) application. It uses .NET Frameworks, System.Char.GetUnicodeCategory() method which identifies every character as Upper Case or Lower Case or Other Letters (which means this is a Non English character) or Control, etc. Check it out.

Known bug: Deepak Gulati of Microsoft India found a bug with this solution, for Tamil (Grantha) Character 'ஸ்ரீ', should be counted as 1, but this code counts it as 2. The reason being 'ஸ்ரீ', technically is composed of two unicode seperate characters 'ஸ்' and 'ரி' which are shown as an one glyph by the font used. I am trying to figure to a way to solve. If you can think of one, post it below in the comments.

My good friend Sri.Muthu Nedumaran has suggested a platform neutral solution that works for Tamil. I am working on that, will post it shortly here.

Thanks to a suggestion from Sanjay Vyas, I have fixed the problem of Tamil texts not rendering properly in my blog.

Analyzing the problem, I found that my Blog Name which is in Tamil and my blog entry text in Tamil were not rendering properly. The encoding is getting set correctly to "UTF-8" in all browsers.

Currently I am using the DasBlog theme in my blog. If I select Just HTML, as my Theme then the texts gets rendered correctly. So it turns out to be a problem with the main CSS that gets applied for DasBlog them. With this, I narrowed the problem to be with the file at "/themes/dasBlog/dasBlog.css". 

Since the problem was with Blog Name and Entry text, I searched for their CSS styles. DasBlog uses .siteName & .itemBodyStyle styles for these.

In the .siteName section, there is a definition letter-spacing: .1em;  I deleted this. Similarly .itemBodyStyle, contained text-align: justify; I deleted this as well. Saved the DasBlog.CSS, refreshed my Mozilla, everything seems to work fine.

Today out of curiousity I did a search of my name in Google Image Search. To my surprise I came across the page of Tamil Internet 2001 Conference held in Malaysia. There I found this photo of Prof.M.Anandhakrishnan, Mr.Muthu Nedumaran, Dr.N.Kannan & me in a plenary session.  Interesting isn't it?

Today I had presented in Kaniam 2004 - a Tamil software developers meet held at Computer Science Department in Anna University. The aim of the meet was to encourage computer science students from all major colleges in Tamilnadu to do projects and research in Tamil.

My presentation was on using Indic Language support in Microsoft Technologies - Windows XP/2003, Office 2003, SQL Server 2000 & Visual Studio.NET 2003. At Vishwak, being the Development Partner for Microsoft's Bhashaindia Project this was a familiar topic for me to handle

My Presentation was appropriately titled as “Tamil dot Net“ by Kani Tamizh Sangam (KTS), the organizers of this event.

எவ்வளவு முறை தினமணி, குமுதம் மற்றும் பலப்பல தமிழ் வலைத்தளங்களில் உள்ள பக்கங்களை Save செய்து பார்க்க முடியாமல் தவித்துள்ளிர்கள்?. இதற்கு காரணம், இன்றும் பல வலைத்தளங்கள் Unicodeற்கு வரவில்லை. They continue to use proprietory or 8-bit encoding.

இன்னொரு முறை உங்கள் browserயை மட்டும் பயன்படுத்தி செய்வது. இதற்கு சுரதா யாழ்வாணன் அவர்களின் Pongku Tamil Reader & Converter  வலைத்தளதில் உள்ள மேல் தட்டில் படிக்க முடியாதவற்றை உள்ளிட்டு கீழே உள்ள ஏதாவதொரு Encoding methodஐ சுட்டுவதன் மூலம் Unicodeற்கு மாற்றிப் படிக்க முடியும்.
