Generally the Internet and especially the contents in the World Wide Web (WWW) are perceived to be dominated by Americans companies. Example cited by many for this includes the well known Internet Giants (Yahoo, Google, MSN), Technology sites (C'Net, SlashDot) and more.

The reason many attribute for the numbers favouring US Company's is the entreprenuer spirit of the americans and the availability of funds. Funds in the form of Venture Capitalists and private investors make it possible for ventures on the Internet to get conceived, born and more importantly grow upto adulthood.

Nowadays, I am noticing change in the spread of contents on the Internet. It is becoming very global in nature, than anything known to Humans before. Though the dominance of "English" is still high, it too will change and it is changing faster than many can even realize. As many predict, the rising red giant (China) and its rapid adoption of Internet over the next few years will make "Chinese" the language used by most on the WWW. At the same time many are missing the rise of Indian Language content as well on the WWW. Though Hindi or Bengali will never overtake Chinese, which is because of the sheer number of Indian languages, the rise of overall Indic contents cannot be ignored. The reasons I believe which is helping (which in future will accelerate) the increase in Indian Languages are the following:

1) Platform Technology: Almost all the popular OS and Browsers now support Unicode and have in-built support for all major Indian Languages. The list includes MS (Bhashaindia), Redhat (Indic Fonts in Linux), Mac OS X (Tiger) and others.

2) Mobile Telephony: The rise in the number of mobile subscribers. India is the fastest growing market in this and the investments made by Telecom companies (Telcos) in India are mind-boggling. Already the metros are saturated with growth, so obviously Rural India is the next big forte for the Telcos. Here Voice Traffic growth alone is unlikely to improve ARPU's (Average Revenue Per User - a technical gargon in the mobile industry to say how much many they make per customer). Growth in Data traffic is paramount and to do it, English Content alone is not going to be sufficient. Regional Language content, like what Reliance Infocomm seems to have realised very early, is certainly going to be the big need of the hour. Consolidation in the mobile industry will also be a huge influencer in the spend. It is expected by Telecom experts that in the next 1 or 2 years India will have only 5 Telcos (BSNL/MTNL, Airtel, Reliance, Tata & Hutch) across the country. This is certainly a need of the hour and which will propel Mobile and Data in India to new heights.

3) Media: This is the most important, the fierce competition that is happening in India on the Media scene. All major players (Times Group, Hindustan Times, India Today, Sun TV, Zee, Star) are expanding into every possible space of media and also spreading their reach with in the country. They are spending 1000's of Crores (of Rupees) in producing Content in various formats. This is certainly to result in huge amount of content, that too regional/local language content. Many of these content will also find their way into WWW as well.

With IE 7.0 Beta1 release last week, the blogworld is buzzing with posts on what is liked and disliked about the new browser release from MS. One topic that everyone seems to love talking is about IE 7.0 and its Standards Compliance (or lack of, depending on which side you see).  I have given below two posts which I felt were worth linking.

The first post is from IE Teams' blog where they have talked about what is likely to be supported and what not in the final release of IE 7.0. If you are a serious Web Developer using CSS a lot, it is worth reading. On the same thread is this link posted in the web standards project's website, which talks about how IE 7.0 team in MS is willing to listen and is eager to co-operate with the standards' body.

Recently I came across this site - sitepoint.com, which contains very good technical articles on CSS, Web Development and more. They also publish a good book on doing web pages with CSS without CSS. Check it out. I have ordered my copy, will tell you my feedback after I get a chance to read it.

Last week at Vishwak we had our manager’s retreat in Sterling Swamimalai. This is a beautiful heritage hotel owned by Sterling Resorts, situated in a peaceful locality with no city-life disturbances. For those like me who have been born and brought-up in City, this gives a good glimpse into the live of a South Indian household of those days. The hotel has been constructed on and around a 110 years old Villa earlier owned by a Brahmin family.  It has few Suites and about 25 Double-Room Cottages and serves only Vegetarian food.

Six of us, we left around 1:30PM from Chennai by Road in a Tempo-Traveller and reached Kumbakonam in about five-and-half hours. We stopped near mid-way in outskirts of Neyveli in a Hotel called “Archana” and had some snacks and coffee. On Day 1, when we reached our rooms it was about 7:30PM. We were welcomed by melodious carnatic music, coming from the veranda near-by. A music troupe of high-school going students were playing Violin and accompanists. Since we were the only audiences, we requested them to switch off the amplifiers and speakers and listened to the music in the natural way. It was a very memorable experience.

Sterling can certainly improve on the taste of the food served and improve the service to 5-star levels. Considering the authenticity and the interior details and the price it is worth visiting. If you are Sterling member remember to register for a voucher with Sterling-Chennai, you will get nearly 30-40% on the normal room rents (like Rs.750 against Rs.1400) and in Ayurvedic Massages.

Lately lot of travelling, discussions and changes at Vishwak has kept me away from regular Blogging. But with what was announced yesterday, I simply couldn't get away without blogging. So here I am.

Microsoft announced yesterday the official name for its next version of (longggg awaited) Windows - code named Longhorn. It is now officially called "Vista", though when you say it for the first time it is little difficult, I find very attractive, has a distinct "hip" factor to it.

Click on the Vista logo above to go Windows Vista homepage and view the announcement video.

"Vista" means A (beautiful) view through an opening (Window?). Certainly makes sense to me. Note that Vista is spelled as title case this means it is not an acronym, it is just a name.

To read more about Windows Vista and the history of Windows, visit this Wikipedia page. The volunteers at Wikipedia don't seem to stop amazing me with there content; This time there work of having a page on something in an encyclopedia within a day is definitely super!!!

If you like me who loves the city you live in, then you will certainly love the dialect of the local language also that is spoken over there. In my case, for Chennai (Madras) we have a famous dialect of Tamil Language called "Madras Bhashai". Just like any other metropolis this dialect is a "Kalakkal" (Mixture) of many other Languages (Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi and a high influence of Butler English). Normally I find it difficult to explain about Madras Bhashai to interested, especially to other Tamils, but that was until I came across this page from Wikipedia. The page is a good compilation about everything on this unique dialect of Tamil. Thank you Karthik Ramaswamy (my college classmate) for sharing this link on our alias.

The other interesting link I came across this time was I Love Chennai. This website is a local software designer's effort on spreading his love for this wonderful city.
