Sometimes the best possible way to visualize something really complex is to see it as a graphic and have it printed on a huge poster. Few years back in one of the Microsoft Mix event, they released this super cool visualization of an illustration of the process of launching a web site. It was released into a website as well called “A website named Desire”, which made the huge poster available as a SilverLight  Application using Deep Zoom. It is super cool, check it out.

(I saw this few years back and today I was trying to find it. Few hours of Google & Bing search, I couldn’t find it. Then with some help from a friend, I found it back. This shows how much more work has to be done in Web Search)

I was trying to get tickets to this movie in Satyam Cinemas for few weeks now, few days back I managed to book for today’s 11:30AM show.  “Avatar” the movie was awesome and the 3D effects were not force-fitted, so they blended naturally into the scenes. The concept of a new world, a new planet the “Pandora” is very convincing and thought-provoking, so I was not surprised when I found that there was a Wikipedia for Pandora called “Pandora Pedia”

Great job by James Cameron and his team. Congratulations!

”சீனா - விலகும் திரை” என்ற இந்தப் புத்தகம் திருமதி.பல்லவி அய்யர் (இவர் என்.டி.டி.வியில் பணியாற்றி போது நமக்கு எல்லாம் தெரிந்த முகம்) அவர்களின் “Smoke and Mirrors: An Experience of China” என்ற ஆங்கிலப் புத்தகத்தின் தமிழாக்கம். சாதாரணமாக ஆங்கிலத்தில் எழுதப்பட்ட நூலை ஆங்கிலத்தில் படிப்பது தான் ஆசிரியர் சொல்ல வந்ததை நாம் சரியாகப் புரிந்துக் கொள்ள முடியும் என்பது எனது கருத்து. ஆனால் கிழக்கு பதிப்பத்தின் கடையில் இந்த நூலைப் பார்த்தவுடன் பிடித்துவிட்டது, முக்கியமாக அதில் கேட்டு இருந்த  கேள்வி என்னை சிந்திக்க வைத்தது – “சீனாவைப் பற்றி நமக்கு என்ன தெரியும்? ஒன்றும் தெரியாது என்பது தான் உண்மை”.

பல்லவி அய்யர்  2002ல் இருந்து 2007வரை ஐந்து ஆண்டுகள் பேய்ஜிங்கில் வாழ்ந்த அனுபவத்தில் இந்தப் புத்தகத்தை எழுதியுள்ளார். மேலோட்டமாக சீனாவைப் பற்றிய நூல் அல்ல இது, அவர்களுடன் வாழ்ந்து, சீனா மொழியைக் கற்று அதைப் பேசி, சீனாவில் உள்ள இன்றைய தலைமறையினருக்கு பாடம் எடுத்த அனுப்பவத்தில் எழுதப் பட்ட நூல்.  பல்லவி அய்யரின் சீனா வாழ்க்கை அனுபவங்களோடு, சீனாவின் பல்வேறு மாநிலங்கள்/நகரங்களுக்குச் அவர் சென்ற பயண அனுபவங்களையும் சேர்த்து சேர்த்து  புத்தகம் நகர்வதால் ஆரம்பம் முதல் கடைசிவரைச் சுவை குறையவேயில்லை. ஆசிரியர் ஒரு இந்தியர் என்பதால், ஒரு இந்தியராக எனக்குப் படிக்கும் போது சீனாவைப் பற்றி தோன்றியப் பல கேள்விகளை ஆசிரியரே கேட்டு அதற்குப் பதிலும் சொல்லியிருப்பது இன்னும் நன்றாக உள்ளது.

கடைசியாக புத்தகத்தை முடிக்கும் போது இப்படி முடிக்கிறார் “இந்தியாவிடம் இருந்து சீனாவும், சீனாவிடம் இருந்து இந்தியாவும் கற்றுக்கொள்வதற்கு நிறைய விஷயங்கள் உள்ளன. ஒன்றின் பலம், மற்றொன்றின் பலவீனம்”.

இந்த புத்தகமும் நான்  இந்த ஆண்டு சென்னை புத்தகக் காட்சியில் வாங்கியது. புத்தகம் வாங்கிய இரண்டு வாரங்களிலேயே படித்து முடித்தது எனக்கு ஒரு சாதனை (சும்மா தான்) என்றால் அதற்கு முழுக்காரணம் நூலின் ஆசிரியர் பல்லவி அய்யர் மற்றும் தமிழில் (அருமையாக) மொழிப் பெயர்த்த திரு.ராமன் ராஜாவும் தான்.

The poster below was given to my son studying in Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School (KK Nagar) last year when he was doing his U.K.G. I have been saving this poster to do a blog post and managed to do it only now. The poster talks about simple ways to educate kids about private body parts, hugs, touching and other similar issues. It was issued by Tulir in support with the school.

One of my favourite getaways from Chennai is Yelagiri hills (details in my earlier post). This time I went there with my family and my brother in law Mr.Badri Thirumalai’s family for the XMas holidays. Staying in Yelagiri is a very relaxing experience and I love it. This time 3 of us (myself, Badri and his son Aravind) decided to do the 4KM trekking into Yelagiri forests. We went and came back on our own, but not sure whether we went in the correct trekking track.

We ventured up to an old pond (360 degree view done with Windows Live Picture Gallery below) in thick of the forest and a little beyond it and when the tracks ended we turned back

The experience was wonderful and relaxing. The trek route was peaceful, clean and green, absolute silence almost all the way in the forest – you can hear only the occasional bird chirps (see the video below), that’s all. It took us less than 2:30 Hours to complete the trek & return. Next time, probably I will take a “Guide” so that we can venture more into the forest.

இப்போதெல்லாம் அதிகமாக பூசணி பூ விட்டின் முன் கோலத்துல தென்படுவது இல்லை. இருந்தும் மார்கழி மாதத்தில் தினம் என் அம்மா எங்கிருந்தாவது பூசணிப் பூவையும், அதை வைக்க (Stand மாதிரி) மாட்டுச் சாணியையும் வரவழைத்துவிடுவார். இன்றுக் காலைப் போட்ட கோலம், அதில் நடுவே அழகாக பூசணிப் பூ (Yellow Melon Flower).

இரா.முருகன் அவர்கள் எழுதிய கிழக்கு பதிப்பகத்தின் “மூன்று விரல்” புத்தகத்தைப் படித்ததில் இருந்து நான் அவரின் ரசிகராகவே ஆகிவிட்டேன். கடினமான ஒரு விஷயத்தை மிக இயல்பாக நகைச்சுவையோடு சொல்லும் அவரின் பாணி எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்துள்ளது. ஆதலால் இந்த ஆண்டு சென்னை புத்தகக் காட்சிக்கு சென்றவுடன் நான் நேரே சென்றது என் நண்பர் திரு.பத்ரி ஷேசாத்ரி அவர்களின் கிழக்கு பதிப்பத்தின் கடைக்கு தான். பத்ரி கூறிப்பிட்டார் இரா.முருகன் இதுவரை கிழக்குக்கு நான்கு புத்தங்கள் எழுதியுள்ளார் என்று – உடனே என்னிடம் இல்லாத மீதம் இரண்டு புத்தங்களை வாங்கிவிட்டேன். அதில் ஒன்று தான் “லண்டன் டயரி”. வாங்கி ஒரிரு நாட்களிலேயே படித்தும் விட்டேன். இதை படித்தயுடன் எனக்கு தோன்றியது - ஆங்கிலத்தை விட என்னால் தமிழ் புத்தங்களை வேகமாகப் படிக்க முடிகிறது என்று.

லண்டன் டயரியில்  லண்டனின் சரித்திரத்தை ரோமானியர்களின் ஆரம்ப கால ஆட்சியிலிருந்து  நமக்கு தெரிந்த விக்டோரியா மகாராணியின் ஆட்சி வரை சுவாரஸ்யம் குறையாமல் சுருக்கமாக சொல்கிறார் ஆசிரியர். சரித்திரத்தை ஒரேயடியாக சொல்லிக் கொண்டு போகாமல், ஒவ்வொரு பகுப்பிலும் ஒரிரு பக்கங்கள் எழுதிவிட்டு தற்கால லண்டனுக்கு வந்துவிடுகிறார். அதில் ஒரு சுற்றுலாபயணியின் கண்களுக்கு தெரியும் அழகான லண்டனைப் பற்றி நம் கண்முன்னே துல்லியமாக படம்பிடித்து காட்டியுள்ளார் திரு.இரா.முருகன்.

புத்தகத்தின் விமர்சனத்தில் சொல்லியிருப்பது மிகப் பொருத்தம் “உதடு விரிந்த புன்னகை குறையாமல் லண்டனின் சரித்திரத்தை உள்வாங்கவும், உட்கார்ந்த இடத்தில் இருந்தபடியே லண்டனின் குளிரை உணரவும் செய்கிறார் இரா. முருகன்”

Like every year this year too I went to Chennai Book Fair. For last few years it has moved location from Quaid-E-Millath Govt. College for Women campus in Anna Salai to St.George Anglo Indian School campus (opp to Pachayappan college). LIFCO’s stall was in the last but 3rd row. In the older arrangement people had to walk past all the stalls in a serial fashion, but in the arrangement here (indoors) in the new venue people can go in parallel to any of the several rows, this meant not everyone sees all the stalls. Also this year the exhibition got over on 10th January 2010 itself, missing the peak sales window during the Pongal holidays (14-16 January 2010).

Yesterday we had a visual delight in the form of a Dance Ballet at Rama Rao Kala Mantap, T.Nagar titled “Siva Swaroopa Thandava Lahari” performed by Smt.Krishnakumari Narendran troupe. Music was scored by Rajesh Vaidya. The dance drama was about Lord Siva‘s divinity & his dance in the form of his Thandavams. There were five scenes or stories portrayed in the performance. To the benefit of audience like me, a brief story of the scene was read out in Tamil by Smt.Krishnakumari before the beginning of each scene. This really helped me to understand and explain it to my pestering 6 year old son.  I learned that the scenes are from songs and texts in Sanskrit and Tamil works such as ‘Tirumandiram’, ‘Tiruvaachakam’, ‘Sivanandalahari’ and ‘Sivapanchakshara Stotram’.

1. First scene was about the greatness of the Lord and emphasised the importance of the word ‘Namasivaya’

2. Siva as the teacher in the form of Dakshinamurthy. Nrithya Jagannathan (the main dancer) illustrated the reason for sitting under a banyan tree with slokas from ‘Tirumandiram’ and ‘Tiruvachagam’

3. Adisankara’s ‘Sivanandalahari’ was done with the story of devas and asuras churning the ocean to get nectar

4. Ravana’s ‘Garvabhangam’ was excellent. The male dancer performed the role of Ravana very well, especially the scenes where he is in pain. I didn’t know this story in Ramayana so it was very interesting. The story goes like this  “Following his conquest of Lanka, Ravana went to Mt. Kailash and was stopped by Nandi when he wanted to see Lord Siva. Ravana abused Nandi saying he is looking like a Monkey, Nandi curses him back saying his kingdom will be destroyed by an Army of Monkeys. Then Ravana attempts to lift the mountain, Lord Siva annoyed by Ravana's arrogance, presses his little Toe on Mt.Kailash, pinning him painfully under it. To get out Ravana made a Veena with his nerves as strings, one of his head as the base for the Veena and composed songs praising Siva called Siva Tandava Stotra. He was then relieved and blessed by Lord Siva”

5.  The fifth and final scene told us the story of Adiseshan taking the form of Saint Pathanjali. The story goes like this “Adiseshan sees Lord Vishnu disturbed one day. On enquiry Lord Vishnu narrates the story of how he and Lord Siva played out a drama in Tarakavanam. The Yogis, scholars and their wives lived  in a village called Tarakavanam were very learned – they believed that a disciplinary life and morale living is all that is needed to attain enlightment and there was no need to pray to Lord Siva or Lord Vishnu. To cure their arrogance on this matter, Mahavishnu and Siva came down to earth and tried to lure the saints, and their wives, at Tarakavanam. The elderly Yogis enraged sent one after the other animals such as tiger, elephant, deer and snakes to attack Lord Siva. Lord Siva won, and the Tarakavanam residents learned their lesson. Adiseshan after hearing this story did penance to Lord Siva to see this performance again. He was asked by Lord Siva to take the form of Saint Pathanjali and visit Chidambaram, which he does and sees Siva’s Thandavam”

Overall an wonderful experience, don’t miss it if you get a chance to see.
